Great-grandson of Alexander Graham Bell charged with espionage

A great-grandson of Alexander Graham Bell has been arrested on charges of being an international spy.
Walter Kendall Myers, 72, and his wife Gwendolyn, 71, were arrested June 4 in Washington, D.C. after the FBI alleged the pair were spying on the United States for Cuba for three decades.
Myers is a former U.S. State Department analyst who had top-secret security clearance, according to The Associated Press.
He is the son of Elsie Alexandra Carol Grosvenor Myers, granddaughter of the famed telephone inventor and aviation enthusiast who made Baddeck his home.
Elsie Grosvenor Myers of Washington died in 2005, leaving behind children Walter Myers Jr., Gardiner Myers, Martin G. Myers Sr., Elsie Martin, Aleck
Myers, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Myers is among a group of siblings who have summer homes at the Bell’s Beinn Bhreagh Estate in Baddeck on the scenic Bras d’Or Lakes.
On Wednesday, Myers and his wife were ordered to remain in jail without bond after a judge agreed with state prosecutors that the pair might try
to flee to Cuba for protection.
Among the allegations, U.S. authorities say the couple provided government secrets using a shortwave radio, by swapping shopping carts at a grocery store and in at least one face-to-face meeting with former
Cuban President Fidel Castro.
They were arrested after an FBI undercover sting operation. The two have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, being agents of a foreign government and wire fraud. The couple faces up to17 years in prison if convicted.
