Both were ground-breakers and way ahead of their times.

I read that they both died, but I never made the connection between them as counterculture figures - I guess because Pekar came a little later, I never thought of him in terms of the original underground comix.

When I first heard the Fugs, in the 1990s (CIA man/We are the Fugs) I seriously thought they were a modern band with anachronistic references in their lyrics.

I first heard of the Fugs in 1966. Fucking-A, what a dinosaur I must be. Read Kerouac in 1963. Got my ass kicked in Chicago in August '68 [and kicked some bit of cop ass in return. we were smart enough not to let ourselves get arrested, and... we brought baseball bats. proper planning prevents piss-poor performance. ] Stayed on Ken Kesey's farm outside Eugene, Oregon in 1969.... etc etc etc.

But I was never a Kupferberg or Pekar fan. I thought the were a bit too "radical America" and not enough revolutionary anti-American mythology. Never could see the "immanent critique" of US capitalism in their work. Must be the dinosaur in me.

Both were important culture critics. I heard that Tuli was ill for some time but Pekar's death was a surprise.
