"Sentence Is Sharply Increased for Lawyer Convicted of Aiding Terror

A federal judge on Thursday increased the sentence of Lynne F. Stewart, a disbarred lawyer convicted of assisting terrorism, to 10 years — nearly five times as long as her original sentence.
Supporters of Lynne Stewart, once a human rights lawyer known for defending unpopular clients.

This is a chilling McCarthyite decision. Judge Koeltl made it quite clear Lynne Stewart is being singled out for her irreverence toward US (in)justice and its war on terror. Her client Omar Abdul Rahman was convicted on bogus sedition charges, and now she will die in prison for making a public statement on his behalf, or what the US government calls "material support for terrorism". Today was a colossal defeat for anyone who believes in civil liberties and opposes creeping american fascism.
