Does anyone know much about immigration to the European Union? The situation is this-- my girlfriend is from an EU country. She is from Hungary.

If we would get married, what kind of immigration rights to EU countries would that give me? If she gets a job in the UK, and we're married, how would that affect me (from the USA) in an attempt to immigrate to the UK? As a single person, use the "points based" immigration system, I would need a guaranteed job paying over 21,000 British pounds per year. If we're married, and she took a job in the UK (fairly straight-forward under the Schengen agreement, from what I understand), could that salary requirement be waived?

What about other EU countries like Denmark or Bulgaria? Is there some general rule, or are rules on a country-by-country system?

Would things be any different if we had a child?

For what it's worth-- I have actually been married to a citizen of an EU country before. She was from Portugal. Unfortunately, at that time, the "material conditions" we not in place for us to live in Portugal, as much as I would have liked to.

The reason I ask is because I don't want to live in the USA forever. I could easily emigrate to a few countries, but I don't particularly want to live in any of those countries. I'd like to eventually have a child, and I would much rather raise that kid in an EU country than any of the ones to which I could easily immigrate. That's why I ask.

I think it's extremly easy, if you&your wife or only your wife is a has the Eu citizenship.

I'll ask my lawyer(my dad^^)for details, and then I'll post it here, but meanwhile, here is a link that I found:

Countries are pretty relaxed on giving out visas when you are married to a citizen so I think it would work out quite easily.

Well, according to two of the worst publications in this country you should have an easy time of it. You might even get to steal ALL our jobs. By yourself.

I asked him:

If you and your wife want to go to the UK, it's no problem if your wife work there!
If she works, she can take with her her husband, even if he has a different nationality.

I don't think you'll have a lot of trouble, since you're from the US.

And wow, I knew English tabloids were bad, but still...

Thanks!

I was doing research also. Looks like I am guaranteed right to residence under European agreements. From what I can figure out, it seems that I would also need to apply for work permit in some places, and this varies from place to place. Still, at least I could live in these places, and I imagine a work permit will be easier to sort if I already have some right to live somewhere.

Those English tabloids are awesome, by the way. Maybe one day, I can be one of those people stealing jobs from honest hard-working British white men. :D

I have to say, that European immigration laws seem much nicer than has been my experience with US immigration laws. The majority of my friends are from various European countries, and most of them have had lots of trouble and significant expenses dealing with US immigration. The only exceptions that I've seen have been for people who are very very rich.

With my ex-wife from Portugal, we weren't even able to get a spouse visa because I was too poor. US immigration law required that I show earnings over a certain amount (something like $30K) in the previous year. The application fee was several hundred dollars that I did not have.
