I assume that quite a few of you must be communists, and the rest socialists. So many of you will be against the whole consumerism/consumer culture, yeah? What do you wear? Do you just shop in normal shops or what? Sorry, just trying to clear this up.

Typically I wear clothes. People who want to go for the "Communist look" aren't interested in communism for the right reasons frankly. I don't wear branded stuff incidentally, but that is more for common sense reasons than political ones. Why pay through the nose for an item of clothing based on its label when you can get a more or less identical item for a fraction of the price?

ALL MY SHIRTS ARE DESIGNER CHE SHIRTS THAT I BOUGHT FROM THE GAP. I WEAR $80 JEANS FROM HOT-TOPIC BECAUSE I'M A REBEL AND MY PARENTS CAN'T MAKE ME WEAR THEIR PREPPY TIES AND SWEATERS.
Well, I wear a lot of black. Just plain black. I'm into Gothic and Steampunk type of clothing so that's always nice to wear. I only have one communist shirt and it's merely red with a hammer and sickle on the front.

I'm anti-capitalist, not "anti-consumerist", which is really just an empty gesture that accomplishes nothing loved by liberals and the more fail anarchists.
Now, I do think that there is sort of a vapid consumer culture promoted by capitalist culture, but that doesn't really make brands good or bad, it just makes people sheep.
mollymae
13th July 2010, 21:03
From what I understand, most people here don't really advocate consumer choice as a means to solving problems. Most would agree that choosing to buy local as opposed to buying from big business, while a good choice with good intentions, will not really solve anything in the long run because one individual's choice does not mean much to a big business. They mostly advocate revolution over gradual changes. I don't speak for everyone by any means though so correct me if I'm wrong.
I personally think it makes sense to avoid supporting something you don't believe in even if you don't think it makes much of a difference, although that is more symbolic than anything. Plus, it's not like anyone has the choice of if they want to participate in capitalism or not. And to be fair in most places it's extremely difficult to avoid being part of the "consumer culture".

I wear mostly t-shirts (usually with graphics from Element, Volcom, or from some brand that I can only order online, also sometimes simple solid color), jeans (dark hues of blue; usually jeans from pacsun or wherever I can buy good cheap jeans), and Adidas shoes.
Sometimes I might have a short-sleeve plaid shirt

To be honest, it's not an important issue for me. The way someone dresses has no correlation with their politics at all, whether they're a communist, anarchist, neoliberal, fascist or otherwise. I'm against consumerism, but living under capitalism, it's sort of hard not to "consume" stuff.

I kind of poor, so I don't spend a lot on clothing. That being said, I pretty much have a "uniform."
If I'm doing physical work (my warehouse job), I wear khaki trousers (got a bunch from local thrift shops for $2 - $5 each), and a brown BDU shirt (local military surplus has them for $5 each), with a khaki belt ($1), and the tan combat boots I was issued in the Army. On the weekends, I replace the BDU shirt with a plain white dress shirt (very cheap at thrift shops).
During the winter, I will add a brown Brooks Brothers suit jacket that I found for cheap ($8) and had tailored to fit. If it's very cold, I will wear a black wool Italian Navy surplus peacoat.

I wear the same two pairs of plain black pants with holes in them I've had for a year or so. Have a few band shirts(one I got from a small shop in mexico) and random black ones(a few from second hand stores). They're all really cheap. I wear a pair of vegan hiking-boots all the time. I usually end up sleeping in my clothes(boots and everything) and don't care how rinkley they get. Sometimes I end up wearing the same outfit for a week without noticing. I just don't really care. Make of it what you will.

I have a lot of personal quirks. High-tops, elbow warmers, berets, and capris (and often in combination) are some of them. I also have developed a habit of tucking the front part of my shirt in and leaving the back part untucked.
I never wear dress shirts unless it's to work, and I only have to wear them on one of my jobs: my part-time job in retail. Overwhelmingly, I prefer Ts. They're much more comfortable than any other kind of shirt, I think.
Yeah, I have the standard Ts and hats proudly displaying my political position (e.g. Bob Avakian Ts, Mao Ts, etc.) and a T promoting breast cancer research (it runs in my family), but more generally I make my own tops and sometimes also my own pants, e.g. sometimes by sowing halves of two shirts I bought in the store together to make a new shirt.

Summer: T-shirts, most have some little etiquettes or brand shit on them, but usually it's fake brands (cheap stuff bought on the pubic market in the roads in myyneighboorhood every monday). Some band shirts. I generally prefer brown, green or black. Though sometimes i dress colourfully. Shorts and fisher-pants, mostly khaki green or brown. I also wear a black athletic hair band so as to gather my long black curly hair back. Converse or white sneakers. Always black or white socks.
Winter: Fat jeans black or light-blue, black grey brown or green loose sport shirts with hoodies, or purple red and blah blah woolen shirts. A black beaver jacket. Beaver high converse shoe/boots. Always black or white socks.
I am anti-consumerist, while it follows my ethics of if you want to achieve something you have to try to be like it. Like Ghandi's saying. Though, it's mostly personnal and as I understand the "anticapitalism is one, anticonsumerism another" I don't propaganise over it.
No leftist shirts, don't want to make revolution just a fashion.

Okay, to add something to my earlier post that will surely take this thread in a somewhat different direction, I also am actually one of the few Marxists I know who keeps up with society's fashion scenes. I don't mean in the sense of always having to be "in" (or even trying to be), but rather in the sense of finding historical/social meaning in yes even fashion trends.
Take for example this late-May article that was in The New York Times called "Maxi Skirts Making a Comeback: A Long, Lean Backlash to the Mini" (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/27/fashion/27MAXI.html). You'll notice how the article discusses feminist influence on this development and also connects its origins to the 2008 U.S. stock market crash that started the current global economic crisis. See, I find that interesting!
Again, not that I actually apply these trends to myself per se. I'm not one whose given to wearing skirts at all, regardless of length, for example. I just find it interesting to look for the social meaning in cultural shifts, such as that described in the linked article.

Usually i wear workman's boots from work (cuz i have 1 other 6 year old pair of shoes that are not as comfortable)
Black T-shirts (i have 4 pairs that are 8years old but still OK only the color is a bit more greyish and super-comfortable its like i am not even wearing it)
Green jeans from work or black jeans (less then a year old)
None are branded except the green jeans that have a logo from my workplace.
And yes for some reason my clothes always seem impervious to wear and tear.
All this comes with my unshaven face because i hate shaving more then twice a week.

Usually a button up over a white undershirt, jeans, and some loafers. Or shorts, sandals, and a t-shirt if I'm hiking or its over 100 or whatever. Mostly I get them from Costco or on sale at TJ Max or whatever; I'm not picky, and can't be arsed to memorize brand names. I have some necklaces that I made, and I got a fairly nice watch marked down 80% on amazon a while ago.

it's good though, I can wear generic UK high street stuff over here and noone has ever seen it before, and then when I go back I can wear generic German high street stuff and everyone will think it's super cool (or not...)
I've never owned a piece of political clothing - and to be honest I always smirk a little when I see people wearing them (sorry if you do!) - though I do have anarchist-y/AR badges on my bag (which I forgot to take off when a mate who works in the German parliament building blagged us a look around it the other day under the pretence that we were there to speak to some official - remembered to dress up smart and be polite and official looking and then the security guard snatched my bag because he saw it had an antifa badge on it :( and they took my passport so they blatantly made a note of me :( I fail at looking smart)

Well, winter is the only time i have anything remotely flamboyant.
a Pea Coat, black Ushanka(without that pin, thats just god damn ridiculous to wear every day) tied up (unless raining, then its down), blue jeans and some boots. still need to water proof the boots though.
also, i sport a stalin 'stache and i parade around with a RSDRP flag singing the varchavjanka
to explain, its not really sovietophilia that i wear a peacoat and a ushanka.
my brother gave me his peacoat because he doesnt wear it anymore and other than that i had hoodies for winter...
the pea coat provided excellent water and temperature protection, the only flaw was it lacked head cover.
a few months before my brother gave it to me i ordered a synthetic fur ushanka because well, they are bad ass. the ushanka wound up being an almost perfect supplement for head prodtection because it goes all the way down to the fucking neck! and the flaps are tieable, and if necessary i can put a hoodie on under the pea coat and then have the flaps of the hat down and the hoodie over that. uber warm. but i live in ca so thats not an issue. the only problem is rain. which the ushanka helps with quite well.
im only afraid that since its all black (coat and hat) that people might think im a nazi :(
oh and for summer. non descript t-shirt and the aforementioned boots and blue jeans.

I cant stand boots mainly because of having to slog the ****ing steel capped variety around building sites not to mention having to wear a pot on your head.
But thankfully I havent had to be on a site in ages so normally just snickers and some old pair of adidas runners and a t-shirt when im working.
When im feeling like dressing smart just smart casual with some form of smart track top with a t-shirt, normal fitting jeans and some nice adidas kicks, preferably retro one, trying to get me hands on some Gazelles but cant for the life of me.
Then when I cant be arsed and just a Lacoste or Fred Perry tracksuit I get down the markets for half nothing with some knock off Nike Airs and normally some form of footie shirt.

Check shirt, black jeans, black brogues, black sweater, Burberry socks.
But if I'm just like lounging around or going for a walk or something I guess I usually wear a t-shirt, some joggers and Air Max 90s or low Dunks.
Right now I'm wearing a grey suit with a flowery tie.

The main reason I started wearing them was that I'm flat-footed and a lot of other shoes (or at least all that the store people have tried to sell at me) have a shitty little bump that puts me off balance, but if the shoe helps support my lower leg too... Then yeah, it's kinda nice.
I also like the fact that I'm finding things I can destroy over time for 6 bucks.
Durability ftw.
Or because I just like to stand out like any respectable leftist should, dontcha know? You guys, hiding in the background, waiting for the right time for revolution, and I've already started the fashion revolution. Sheesh guys. Get with the times. :tt2:

I still put my pants on one leg at a time.
Except with some of my old pants. With those, when I put one leg in there's no more room for the other.

I'm pretty wierd. There are times I put on my punk vest, a black and white camo saffari hat, fingerless gloves, camo pants, a rasta color studded belt and really old van slip ons. I don't have on socks most of the time either.
I got shorts that don't fit that i wear all year round, and t-shirts that are mostly way to big.

I wear t-shirts, combats and steel-toed boots. Comfy and hardwearing.
Boots can be awesome. But the fetish seem to be more towards the Combat Boots side than anything that actually looks good.
What the hell are you talking about, combat boots and safety boots are the best kind!
My boots look like this:
Good grief. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing shit like that. And those trousers are way too tight.

I seem to have good luck with thrift stores and boots. I really like boots for some reason.
Found these for 6 bucks:

And yes, I realize the "US history" behind the boots, and no, I don't care. I just care that they feel amazing, were cheap, didn't look like shit, and fit.
Those are pretty awesome.

Jesus those boots are seriously awful. As with Andropov i could never casually wear steel toed boots after wearing them for 10 hours a day at work back in the day. My feet would be destroyed. You can't beat a normal pair of timberlands mind you:

Those are my boots. They are the footwear that I use 95% of the time. I was issued them when I was (briefly) in the Army, and by now I must have walked hundreds of kilometers in them. They're broken in perfectly and fit so well that I hardly notice that I'm wearing them.

Nah, cowboy boots are way taller, those are "dress boots", and I don't know anybody who wears them, but it seems like a euro thing to me. We got a pair in my store once, I wore them around, tucked my shirt in, and slicked my hair back, I think we called it the "german creeper" look.

Bailey is hardly identifying himself as a "Chav", hes just saying that middle class twats like to identify him as a "Chav" cause he wears trackies.
BTW I hate the term Chav, a derogatory slur often just directed at innocent working class people by the media and the middle class.

Ah, well fair enough then.
BTW I hate the term Chav, a derogatory slur often just directed at innocent working class people by the media and the middle class. It's not really a term I use for pretty much this reason. It is often used, though, by workers I know. I know one bloke, though, who argues that it refers to middle class wankers who are trying to act "hard" by aping what they view as working class traits (ignorance and brutality) which makes sense but is certainly not how the word is used in the mainstream.
I know one bloke, though, who argues that it refers to middle class wankers
Maybe he was thinking of the term "Chavismo"?

I don't use the word so much anymore, but when I was at school I used to refer to people wearing trackies and being assholes to me as chavs. Some of them were not very well off, but a lot of them were fairly "middle class".
