The Catcher In The Rye movie odds: Justin Bieber to play Holden Caulfield? (http://www.bettingpro.com/category/Entertainment/The-Catcher-In-The-Rye-movie-odds-Justin-Bieber-to-play-Holden-Caulfield-201007050084/)
Speculation is increasing that classic novel could finally be transferred to big screen
This year's sad death of author JD Salinger has led to renewed speculation that his classic novel The Catcher In The Rye will be adapted into a movie and bookmakers have even started betting on when that will happen and who will play iconic figure Holden Caulfield.
Salinger refused to allow any film adaptations of his works after major changes were made to the plot of an early short story when transferred to the big screen.
However, he did once admit the much sought after screen play rights to The Catcher In The Rye could be sold off following his death in order to boost his family's inheritance money.
"Since there's an ever-looming possibility that I won't die rich, I toy very seriously with the idea of leaving the unsold rights to my wife and daughter as a kind of insurance policy," he reportedly declared.
"It pleasures me no end, though, I might quickly add, to know that I won't have to see the results of the transaction."
There are no signs of a deal being done yet, but Irish bookmakers Paddy Power (http://www.caledonianmedia.com/sitestat.aspx?siteurl=2858)are offering 12/1 that the film version is released next year, 6/1 for 2012, 4/1 for 2013 and 3/1 for 2014.
Those who believe Salinger's family will hold firm can get 4/6 that there will be no movie released before 2015 at the earliest.
Should the film be made, though, the major talking point will be over who gets to play the part of teenage rebel Caulfield.
The role was linked with such celebreties as Jerry Lewis, Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson in past years, while Tobey Maguire and Leonardo Di Caprio are more recent high-profile stars touted as possible candidates.
Timing could be everything in who finally gets this plum part but Paddy Power (http://www.caledonianmedia.com/sitestat.aspx?siteurl=2858)currently make Max Records 5/1 favourite following his success in Where The Wild Things Are.
Next best in the betting on 8/1 is Chandler Canterbury, who earned critical acclaim when starring alongside Nicolas Cage in Knowing and also appeared in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
The award-winning Jimmy Bennett is a 10/1 chance after being hailed for his performances in Daddy Day Care, The Polar Express, Evan Almighty and Shorts.
Disney stalwarts Moises Arias, Nick Jonas and Zac Effron are 14/1, 20/1 and 25/1 respectively, while Thomas Sangster is flying the flag for England here on 16/1 after impressing in Love Actually and Nanny McPhee. However, the most interesting wildcard in this market could well be pop sensation Justin Bieber at 12/1.
The 16-year-old singer-songwriter has limited acting experience but such is his amazing popularity he would guarantee turning this cult classic into a more mainstream box-office hit.
