There is chaos in the ether and there has to be controlled. People can't just send things at the frequency they want. And why should you allow media controlled by rich people to agitate for killing the president. I bet your home country have stronger laws controlling the ether then Venezuela has.

I would generally try to avoid talking to right-wing libertarians.:)

Just tell them that the people love Chavez and that he was democratically elected.

"If I was portrayed positively in the North American media, then I would be afraid" - Chavez to Oliver Stone

Well, the leading Venezuelan private media station has more viewership than all three national networks combined, and all of the private media in Venezuela is viciously opposed to Chavez. So much for mass manipulation.

i never thought much of him. try getting solid numbers and proving economic growth or increase of literacy rates. the world bank (may they rot in hell) actually has a nifty database that is open to the public with literacy rates/infant mortality, ect, just show him the numbers. also try the millennium development goals reports that involve Venezuela.

No, he's dealing with a pseudo-libertarian, and they're hostile to democracy. You might want to provide Robin Hahnel's Venezuela: Not What You Think (http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/2007/hahnel301107.html), though it's a bit dated. The fact that the corporate Venezuelan media hates Chavez and its white personalities have denigrated him with anti-Indian epithets in the past might be brought up.

Despite my distaste for Chavez(primarily due to his lack of sexy facial that is typically sported by the most popular socialist leaders), the best way to fight this is with solid statistics. Even an idiot can't deny the dramatic improvements in Venezuela.

Private propaganda (private media) is just as dangerous as state propaganda. Or maybe even more dangerous because you can't control private media at all. But you can control the state to a certain degree by voting. I'm not a huge Chavez fan but most of the time he just didn't renew the contracts of some private media corporations. I think 30% or so of the media is nationalized in Venezuela.

That might be a plus for a libertarian actually. Libertarians(in the US context) are almost always hardcore racists.

That's sort of excessive, though I do see the foundations of pseudo-libertarianism in white populism and their Eurocentrism.
