View Full Version : Psychology and The Pharmaceutical Industry

¿Que?

I'm posting this on chit chat because I'm more or less just mentally masturbating on some personal experience I went through this past 3rd and 4rth of July.

Now on with the show...

The psychological industry is pretty much under complete control of the pharmaceutical industries. I have little doubt about that, but even less evidence. I'm sure a few hours on Google (and maybe if I'm lucky, a couple of RevLeft members) will turn up some real dirt on this collusion.

The first question that comes up is why call it a collusion in the first place. Psychology and drugs have been inextricably linked since the former's inception. Another few hours on Google (or ambitious RevLeft members) could provide details on this relationship. Maybe this question is irrelevant, really.

I want to talk about some other stuff that may be related. The first is Scientology. Let's not forget that Scientology places itself in direct opposition to the psycho-pharmaceutical complex. I want to know, has this helped contribute to the overall passive and accepting nature people seem to display with regard to psycho-pharmaceuticals? In other words, has Scientology discredited the anti-psych movement?

Another concern of mine has to do with passivity and acceptance of wage labor. Is the psychological industry with the help of psycho-pharm designed to keep us working and docile. Or even worse, isn't psychology a privilege of the bourgeoisie. Mental health services are not readily available to the working class, considering that health services in general a hard to come by.

Finally, what about Bill Maher. He seems to go all out against the pharmaceutical industry. He doesn't even bother with the psychological pretext.

If the system is so irrational, is there a rational answer?

Please with the thoughts now, thanks!:thumbup1:

The topic of the pharamaceutical and more generally the 'health' industry is a topic of personal interest for me. I might expand on some of my thoughts when I have the time. Sufficite it to say, the pharamaceutical industry's business is sickness, and business is a-booming.
