The Left Party has changed its name, albeit temporarily, in order to profile its core issues and arrest the long-term slide in voter support, hoping to deflect criticism of party leader Lars Ohly.
"Our V [from Vänsterpartiet] today stands for the Welfare Party [Välfärdspartiet]," Ohly told SvD.se on Monday. "We want to create the world's best welfare system without profit interests. This is our most important election issue."
Ohly sees his party as welfare's strongest defenders, even against its coalition partners, the Social Democrats and Green Party.
While the Left Party gains some credit for its ideological consistency, its party leader remains a problem, according to a media and public opinion analysis from Retriever and Synovate which indicates that party could gather the votes of only one in 20 in the autumn election.
In other words, for a man who's got the appropriate uncle's abdomen and aged head, Lars Ohly doesn't have the abdominal guts to stick it up against the socdems or Greens, let alone the brains to commit verbally and charismatically towards some sort of overthrow of capitalism.
Could this be a recipe for a split? If I were a member of the Left Party, I would be pissed off at this kind of nonsense. Changing the name to Welfare Party "temporarily" suddenly, to show that the party wants to create "the world's best welfare system" in Sweden. Yeah, I would rather the party talk about socialism, about international solidarity.

All of the perties that are represented in the swedish parlament are moving towards the political centre, hoping that there will be the place to gain more votes.
Lars Ohly is coward, when he first got elected to the chairman post in the party he made it clear that he was a communist. Then media did a heavy load of bull shit attacs on Ohly but instead of being strong and stand for it he acceded and suddenly he wasnt a communist annymore. During his time the party has lost more and more votes, also during his time theive made some clear right-wing statements, like when they wont support ore cooperate with our moste preogressive union, the anarchosyndicalist orientated SAC.
I hope that they wont split, the swedish left have had to many split ups under the last 90 years and rearly they make anything better, just more small sects and a weaker labour movement.

Well, the worst thing is probably that the largest opposition group to Ohly who is considered the "old guard" in the party is even closer to the social democrats and presents themselves as "new" and "none of that commie stuff", pathetic leftists such as Jonas Sjögren or whatever his name is: that dick who has spent his last few years in the United States (I think even going so far as being involved in activities of the SPUSA in New York) and constantly whines about how the Left Party must "come to terms with its past" (referring to the need for the party to distance itself from things that might upset capitalists and the established order like communism and anything revolutionary).
And that's disregarding the actual free-market neo-liberal faction within the party...
Additionally, this "Welfare Party" stunt (there is already a local party with that name and all) is mostly to take eyes off the fact that the Left Party utterly capitulated to the socialdemocrats vis a vis the question of NATO, Swedish involvement in Afghanistan, and any foreign policy positions; to take the prying eyes away from this utter betrayal of any consistent political policy they now want to present themselves as able to push the social democrats and the environmentalists to agree with some (mostly very weak) opposition to further privatisation and deconstruction of the welfare provisions and labour regulations.
