Vlad the Impaler is today known best as the historical inspiration for Dracula. He's also characterized as a sadistic warlord who relished in impaling thousands of people on sticks, nailing hats to people's heads, etc.
But the side of Vlad that people don't talk about is his heroic anti-imperialist efforts against the Ottoman Empire as well as Western Europe in order to preserve his kingdom's sovereignty.
I think it's high time that we showed our appreciation to this anti-imperialist icon.

Oh god, Leslie Nielson as Dracula...
Christopher Lee is the one and only Dracula, as far as I'm concerned.

Although most of my favorite vampire/vampirism-related movies have nothing to do with Dracula...

I just watched something about him on Spike about him fighting Sun Tzu or something. Vlad won.

Yeah, which was absurd. Sun Tzu was (is) god.

Deadliest Warrior is a stupid, unscientific show that is all about machisimo blood and guts and swords and guns.
It's safe to say that I've watched every episode.

I think I may have saw the Viking Berserker vs. Japanese Samurai battle (which the Samurai won).

You're terribly mistaken, everybody knows that Vlad was a fascist : http://www.revleft.com/vb/vlad-tepes-he-t134777/index.html

He was somewhat of a bonapartist, I'd say. My school teacher used to tell a story about his reign, actually it's end.
In a certain day, an old lady went to the villages well. When she reached she gasped "Vlad is dead". Someone asked her "How do you know that?". There was a golden mug, that was used by many a thirsty traveller , but only today was it stolen.
Bascially he is seen around as a leader that used violence in order to protect the common people and the kingdom's independence.
