I have a dilemna.

I am in love with Peer-to-Peer filesharing and torrents. I love the concept. I love the idea that you don't need central servers, and that information can be freely shared over the internet without relying on a single, expensive hub to download from. I'm also finding it easier to find certain files with a torrent than I would from central server downloading.

However, Peer-to-Peer filesharing is based on pretty much mutual aid. If you want to download off of others, others should be able to download off of you. I ordinarily don't have a problem with this. But the dilemna I have is that allowing others to download off of me leads to my internet monthly limit getting capped. As a result, I'm finding that after downloading a torrent, I immedeatly turn it off.

I don't want to be a selfish bastard that takes but doesn't give. But I also don't want to be swamped with massive usage bills every month. Is there a way I can allow others to download off of me without my monthly internet bill not overloading?

Well, if your isp is doing that to you I don't think anyone could blame you. If you want to make up for the "karmic" debt, do something to forward the net neutrality movement (or whatever it may be called) over in Australia. Seems like you guys need that.

In the grand scheme of things, no one is going to care if one person doesn't share. If you don't have the money to support everyone else in the network, don't worry. There are plenty of other people doing their bit.

But yeah, torrents are the shit.

Is it that you have a set internet use per month, or is your ISP throttling because your using a torrent?
If its throttling make sure your client your using is using encryption, which most client have now a day.

But i think your problem is more that you only have a limited amount of internet use each month, in that case no one can blame you. Normally whenyour downloading your seeding at the same time, so your still giving something back.

Classic example of the "free rider" problem. Don't let the reactionaries see this thread!!

You know, I wouldn't be suprised if that was the case. My ISP is Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications company. It's notorious for selling user details and having horrible customer service. If it's trying to attack torrents as well, then that might be the problem. I'll look into the encryption thing, thanks.

Fair enough, that's good to know, and a bit of a relief.

But I want to help! I'm an unwilling slacker :crying:

I might just narrow this question down somewhat. Is there a way I can change the settings of my torrent to slow down the upload speed. Or alternatively, shut down torrents that have "died" (have a handful of seeders and a ton of leechers).

I use Utorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/), and you can choose the maximum upload/download speeds I think, as well as the maximum number of people that you seed to.

The whole concept of torrents is a great idea. I used to be a member of Tapecity and the Traders Den, they had some great concerts for download.

I have Utorrent too.
Just found it. I limited my global upload rate to 5 kb/s. Not sure if that's too little or too much :(

5 kb/s is tiny, but if you simply don't have enough data traffic you really don't need to worry about it. Seriously.

I might add that you should try Usenet.

If you worry about your Karma points (you can leech and thats fine as long as you stick to public trackers) just distribute it and share it with others in different ways. For example, let's say you download a Linux distro but you can't seed it back. Burn copies of it and spread it around at your local Linux users group. Or if you get a movie or game share it with your friends and anyone else that is looking for it.

Letting a torrent continuously upload/seed in the background is just shit when you have wireless internet. Don't do it.
