The socialist movement has had a complicate relationship with the Freemasons. Masonry generally represented the progressive wing of the 18th century Enlightenment. Leaders of the classic 18th/19th century bourgeouis revolutions like Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Robespierre and the Committee of 12 during the French Revolution, Bolivar, Mazzinni, and Garibaldi were Masons.

During the First International Marx had an alliance with a "clandestine" (not officially recognized) French Masonic group, the Philadelphians. This was directed against the Bakuninists and Prodhounists.Some Masons claim that Marx was a Mason.

After the early period of Marxism it generally wasn't "cool" for a communist to be a Mason. The Masonic Lodges were regarded as a "networking" organizations for the ruling class socially and in terms of business contacts. A proletarian revolutionary couldn't be a Mason and Masons were weeded out of socialist parties.

Trotsky as a young man was briefly fascinated by the Freemasons. He wrote a book on them which has been lost. There's an interesting article he wrote about them (which I can't find on the MIA)

As an early leader of the Comintern Trotsky had members of Masonic lodges banned from joining. Much later, when Trotsky met with CLR James and US Trotskyists, he made some joke that "there are too many Masons here". Not sure what he meant by this.

Masonry was generally banned by Stalinist regimes. Its always been legal in Cuba and may have played a role in the Cuban revolution. I doubt Raoul or Fidel are Masons but a fair number of Cuban leaders may be. Masonry is legal in the PRC.

There's a lot of loopy right wing literature on the Masons. there's definitive proof that Marx, Lenin, Trotsky were part of a vast Masonic-Zionist conspiracy. They also ate babies and shapeshifted into reptiloids.

There's a theory (which I also can't find) from a left perspective, that the Bolshevik Party may have started as some sort of Masonic offshoot in the RSDP.

Its interesting that Glenn Beck touts masonic conspiracy theories. He's a Mormon convert and the Mormons got most of their shtick from the Masons. The Mormon Church is actually considered to be a "clandestine" Masonic lodge.

I've heard that Lenin was a freemason, but I can't be positive. Supposedly, they discussed his masonic links on some Russian radio station, but I've never heard it for myself and I'm unable to get any information above someone simply making the assertion that Lenin was a mason.

What's your problem? I said what I heard, not what I believe. I specified that I am not able to locate any information on Lenin and freemasonry beyond anyone simply making the claim that the two are connected. You have a few conspiracy sites out there bringing it up, but nothing above that.

You know, it's not alright to just demand 'research' from someone who said they couldn't find support for what they said, but they heard it (which means they are accounting for the fact that they may not be able to cite something), and end your post with "or just fuck off."
