I have been reading into cults, I find them deeply disturbing but also quite fascinating. I am wondering if there are any decent studies/articles on the matter that comrades can recommend? Are there any writings on the matter from a radical, atheist perspective?
Cheers.

Robert Jay Lifton wrote several books about the psychology of cults. He's author of "The Nazi Doctors" about the psychology of doctors who worked at Auschwitz. He did work, based on interviews w/the members, on the Aum Shinriko cult. I don't know Lifton's politics, he seems to be liberal/left. He wrote an interesting book on the psychology of Maoism.
Most anti-cult literature seems to have either a Christian fundamentalist or right wing agenda. All non-Christians are cultists and all people who join radical left groups are cultists.
Operation Clambake and anon criticizes the Scientology cult from what might be a somewhat left perspective, or at least they don't have a rightist agenda.

Thank you. I did notice that a lot of the "anti-cult" stuff came from either fundamentalist Christians, or other weird cult-like churches.
