Does anyone else here go fishing? I went out today and caught myself a 12 inch catfish and some perch

I always catch and release though; I'm much too squeamish to cut the things open.

Fishing always looked boring to me, although I've never tried.

Does catch & release harm the fish as much as some people say (i.e. the fish may just die later from its wound)?

I've been a fisherman for, well, basically my entire life. Seventh generation, in fact.

I hate sport's fishing, though. I compare it to an accountant doing accounting in his free time.

A lot of "sporties" who come up to my town annoy me, too. I don't hate them as much as my parents do though.

Not unless one of the fish's gill rakers are broken, generally speaking. If a gill is ripped, then yes, it will eventually bleed to death.

But you'd be amazed at what fish can survive otherwise. I've seen fish swimming around with almost half their body gone, from usually either sea lions or bears.

i believe the point is more to have some beers, enjoy the beautiful scenery and spend some quality time with friends rather than to catch as many fish as possible. at its best, fishing is an idler's past time.

Fish to diversify your diet and have fun..don't just catch and release. That's pretty pointless (sport fishing, if that's all you do).

I love fishing, I'll be getting back into it soon.

Then why not just do that instead of having some false pretense with expensive gear?

Its not expensive if you dont search for pro things. The reed, it can cost from 5 euros to 50 and you have it for long time, and you just add for bait some very cheap every day material, there are and some people selling some for like 1 euro. Its not that expensive, and it is a cheap way to have some relaxed time with friends than many other things.

you only need to spend like 60$ to get enough decent gear to last you a long time in canada.

i also share a hatred for sports fishermen, with their boats and rods that are more expensive than my house. there's honestly nothing like cracking open a beer with your buddy on a river bank waiting for something to bite, and the thrill of getting something on your hook is just awesome.

EDIT: the reason we only catch and release is that fish off the island of montreal are all fed on sewage... you don't really want to eat that crap (literally). if it's out in the country in the middle of nowhere, then mabye i'd fillet something to take home

I did some fishing when I was young, when I didn't care about inflicting pain. It was also incredibly boring.

It can be fun. My dad and I used to go fishing. It is a lot more fun than deer hunting.. at least to me. Cold tree stands suck.
