Maoists not to name PM candidate now REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, June 26: The Maoists have decided that the party should head the national consensus government, but did not forward any name as the party´s prime ministerial candidate.

“As the largest political party in parliament, we decided that we should lead the consensus government, but we did not decide to forward any specific name as the party´s prime ministerial candidate,” said a top Maoist leader on condition of anonymity.

The last meeting of top officials had decided that Chairman Dahal and none else should head the national consensus government if the party gets a chance.

But leaders close to Dahal and Dr Baburam Bhattarai have interpreted the decision differently.

“We corrected the earlier decision that none other than Chairman Dahal should be the party´s prime ministerial candidate. Now we are free to talk leadership with other political parties for a national consensus government,” said a leader close to Bhattarai.

However, leaders close to Dahal say the issue of who will head the next government never cropped up seriously.

Party to hold plenum, not general conventions

The Maoist party has also decided to hold a plenum, not the general conventions slated for February. “We cannot hold general conventions under present circumstances. We should hold a plenum instead,” one leader quoted Dahal as saying.

Dahal has also left the decision on the party´s principle enemy to the plenum. Party hardliners led by senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya want the party to declare India the principle enemy while other leaders led by Bhattarai want domestic feudalism backed by foreigners to be declared principal enemy.

Street, government and parliament as principal front

The party has decided to continue with the front of parliament, the street and the government to complete the revolution and draft a ´progressive´ constitution. Dahal had stated that the party should rather stay in opposition and chart out the course of the struggle.

Party to disrupt parliament

The party has also decided to disrupt parliamentary proceedings until Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal resigns.

Similarly, the party has decided that it cannot fix the number of combatants to be integrated into state forces, as demanded by the NC and CPN-UML. “It will be humiliating for the party to fix the number now,” said a leader.

At the politburo meeting, Chairman Dahal came under criticism for leading the party nowhere over the last year and for continuous “double-talk” that “tarnished the image” of the party.

Fun, fun, fun. A "national consensus government" with bourgeois parties, preserving bourgeois relations in the workplaces and in the countryside.
