Basically, the Ontario provincial Govt passed virtually secretly a regulation about a month ago, which allow cops to arbitrarily present passersby near the G20 security zone (a significant portion of Toronto’s downtown) with two choices: a) get searched, get ID'd and get theirs names ran OR b) get handcuffed, put in a paddy-wagon, and shipped to the prisoner processing center.

People learned about this only when the first arrests were made using this regulation a few days ago.

According to the new regulation, “guards” appointed under the act can arrest anyone who, in specific areas, comes within five metres of the security zone.
Within those areas, police can demand identification from anyone coming within five metres of the fence perimeter and search them. If they refuse, they face arrest. Anyone convicted under the regulation could also face up to two months in jail or a $500 maximum fine.

What if the person complies with the identification request, is it still under their power to detain the person? I mean, of course it is, but my last hope for something humane leads me to ask.

The early price tag was a billion dollars. Helicopters are flying pretty close.
