View Full Version : Which Faction?

In the old Planescape AD&D setting, there were 15 ideological factions vying for power in Sigil, the city at the center of the multiverse. Which one would you join?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faction_%28Planescape%29

Athar

("Defiers", "The Lost"), who deny not only the gods' right to pass judgment over mortals, but their very divinity. They claim that the gods (whom they call "powers") are powerful but have limits and do not deserve worship. Instead, Athar priests channel divine power from what they call the "Great Unknown", or what they believe to be the true divine force behind everything. Their headquarters in Sigil is the Shattered Temple, the former temple of the dead god Aoskar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aoskar). The Athar are broadly derived from real-world atheists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism), agnostics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnosticism), and Deists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deist).

Believers of the Source

("Godsmen"), who believe that each life is a test, and that every person has the potential to become a god. Their headquarters is the Great Foundry, symbolizing their belief that the multiverse constantly forges and refines all beings. Shares many parallels with Hindu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu) and Buddhism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism). However, the ultimate goal is not Nirvana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana) but apotheosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apotheosis), making it a religion of the left-hand path; therefore a much closer analogue is that of LaVeyan Satanism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaVeyan_Satanism).

Bleak Cabal

("Bleakers", "Madmen"), who deny that any belief system has any merit; as they see it, the universe has physical rules, but no metaphysical or philosophical ones, therefore any meaning in life must come from within. Their headquarters is the insane asylum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insane_asylum) of Sigil, called the Gatehouse. They are derived from real-life existentialists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Existentialism) and nihilists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilists).

Doomguard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomguard_%28Planescape%29)

("Sinkers"), who believe in the sanctity and inevitability of entropy. They see the decay and destruction of the universe as necessary; for once it is destroyed all imperfections will be gone with it, paving the way for a perfect new world. Their headquarters is Sigil's Armory, where they forge weapons as tools of destruction.

Dustmen

("The Dead") believe that both life and death are false states of existence, that there is a state of True Death which can only be accomplished by denying one's emotions and physical wants and needs (a conception similar to oblivion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oblivion), but also conceivably to Nirvana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana)). Their headquarters is the Mortuary, where Sigil's dead are interred or cremated. Their philosophy is closely related to acosmism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acosmism), with a more death geared ideal. The faction shares similarities with Buddhism and with the Stoics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoics) as well.

Fated

("Takers", "The Heartless") believe that those with power and ability have the right to own what they control and to take what they can from those who are unable to keep it, and that it is their right to exploit any situation to their advantage, regardless of how it affects anyone else. Their headquarters is the Hall of Records, where they serve as the tax collectors of Sigil. They are derived from real-life Social Darwinists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Darwinism) and the philosophies of Ayn Rand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayn_Rand).

Fraternity of Order

("Guvners"), who believe that knowledge is power; they learn and exploit both the natural laws of the universe and the laws of society. Their headquarters is the City Court, where they serve as judges and legal advocates. They recall the Sophists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophists) of Classical Athens.

Free League

("Indeps"), who reject the other factions and their bureaucratic, hierarchical dogmatism; in fact, they don't consider themselves a faction at all. For this reason, they don't have a factol or an official headquarters, though Sigil's Great Bazaar serves as an unofficial one. They believe in individual freedom as the highest good and could be considered similar to libertarianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism).

Harmonium

("Hardheads"), who believe that peace and stability can only be established under one rule -- theirs. The planar faction known as the Harmonium is actually just a small part of a much larger political entity which rules over the entirety of the Prime Material world of Ortho. In Sigil, they serve as the city's police force, and their headquarters is the City Barracks. They are related to present day authoritarianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authoritarianism), particularly religious evangelicalism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelicalism) and fundamentalism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamentalism). It is strongly advised that visitors to Sigil never, under any circumstances, use the term 'Hardhead' in front of Harmonium members.

Mercykillers

("The Red Death"), who believe in justice and retribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retributive_justice) at the expense of all else. Their name does not come from "killing out of mercy," but rather "killing mercy." Their credo that mercy is for the weak, and the merciful should be punished. Appropriately, their headquarters is Sigil's Prison, where they carry out the sentences of convicted criminals.

Revolutionary League

("Anarchists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism)"), who believe that social order and man-made laws are inherently corrupt and must be destroyed--though none of their members can agree on what, if anything, should replace them. Like the Indeps, they don't have a factol or a headquarters, though they have many safe houses and secret meeting places.

Sign of One

("Signers"), who believe that everyone is the center of their own reality and that reality can be reshaped by the power of imagination. Their headquarters is the Hall of Speakers, which houses Sigil's legislature. Some of them are solipsists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solipsism), though most are not so extreme.

Society of Sensation

("Sensates"), who believe that accumulating experiential knowledge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experiential_knowledge) through the senses is the only way to achieve enlightenment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enlightenment_%28spiritual%29). Their headquarters is the Civic Festhall, which features an endless series of entertainments and a library of magically stored experiences. They are remniscent of ancient Epicurianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicurianism).

Transcendent Order

("Ciphers"), who believe that by tapping in to the 'cadence' of the planes and acting through pure instinct they can achieve a higher state of being. Their headquarters is the Great Gymnasium, where members can train to improve their bodies and minds. Their philosophy could be considered similar to Taoism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taoism), and its offshoots, such as Zen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen) Buddhism.

Xaositects

("Chaosmen"), who believe that the only truth is revealed in chaos. The Xaositects have been quite accurately described as being "totally off their rockers, every one of 'em." Their headquarters is the Hive, which is the most disorganized part of the Sigil ward of the same name. Some may consider their philosophy a slight twist to accidentalism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accidentalism), but a far more relevant parallel is the Cynics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynics) (Greek κῠνικός "dogs") of antiquity. There is even a gang of Xaositects called the "Starved Dogs Barking" featured in Planescape: Torment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape:_Torment). Compare with real life discordianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discordianism).

ha holy crap, I thought I was the only one who knew this game even existed! lol, Planescape Torment was the shit, I love how it played and read like a book...only thing that was a little weird was the lack of conventional weapons, but eh, it was still pretty fun.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.

Also, Fraternity of Order.

Isn't there an update of Planescape (or is it Dark Sun, another awesome setting) coming out for 4th ed? If so I might actually give it a whirl, despite my massive reluctance to have anything to do with World of Dragons.

The innerwebs were built for this poll, ie this is some of the nerdiest shit I've ever seen. I'd go with Revolutionary League both because I'm an anarcho-syndicalist and because the description gives me the lulz. Also, the Mercykillers sound like a quaint little group of fascists a la the RUC Special Branch.

*SPOILER ALERT* (The anarchist section of Planescape: Torment)

NPC: Bedai-Lihn

Go up and talk to Bedai again. This time she asks if you are happy as
a Godsmen. Say: "No, not really", she'll ask why not to which you should
reply: "Because I'm coming to realize that it's an empty title." She
asks if you are DEVOTED to the Godsmen, tell her that you are NOT, and
she'll say that you've come to the right person.

*ALIGNMENT*: Despite all the LYING that can happen here, there are no
alignment shifts.

Bedai wants to know if you are up for sticking it to the Godsmen by
sabotaging that war machine they are building.

*ALIGNMENT*: Saying "I'll do it" makes you a little more CHAOTIC and
EVIL. Conversely, saying that you won't do it makes you
more LAWFUL and GOOD. (although why would sabotaging a
device that is being made for DEMONS make you more EVIL?)

Once you've agreed to this, don't act weak (by which I mean, don't sound
too concerned about innocent lives being lost), or she'll kick you out
of the project. She wants you to sabotage the machine in some fashion,
then return when you've done that.

Note: At any time, you can turn Bedai in to Keldor... no reward, and
no particular reason to do it. Also if you turn Bedai in for
a deed that YOU committed, you become more EVIL.

To get to the machine you'll need to talk to Keldor for permission.
He'll think you trustworthy and give you the token. Go to the main
foundry, up to the big doors, and show your token to the guards. They
let you in.

Talk to the Gith, Kel'lera, and ask her about the weak spots on the
device. She'll tell you that the firing controls would destroy not only
the device, but kill everyone involved in creating the device.

Note: Not important, but I just -have- to mention it. In the unmodded
game, Kel'lera and the workers all just stand there. There was a
-ton- of scripting that really made the work area come alive
though, but none of it worked due to a missing area file that
was supposed to set it all in motion. I managed to reconstruct
it and get it all working. Just take a moment to watch Kel'lera
walk around the room and interact with the workers, it's really
cool. This is one of my favorite fixes. [from Qwinn]

Now at the back of the cannon, you'll find the "weak spot" she talked
about. Click on the controls and sabotage it. Return to Bedai for your
reward (8000 exp). She offers you a new job, this time to kill the
factol, Sandoz (the man you talked out of killing himself). You'll find
him where he was before. Just go up to him and force-attack him (650
exp).

Return to Bedai again for your reward (8000 experience). Now all Bedai
wants is to get out of this place. She needs you to get her some Smith
gear as they are the only ones who can get out of this place. Drop back
to the Foundry level and talk to the Clerk, Nadilin. Ask for a disguise
and he'll sell you one for 60 copper. He knows precisely what you want
it for as well.

Give the disguise to Bedai for another 8000 experience. You then follow
her out to the warehouse where she explains her deeds to you

Is the prison guards' union voting or something? I would have never expected Mercykiller to take second place on this site.

Is it really a step up from being a cop (Harmonium)?

doomguard or Revolutionary League (but i voted doom guard)

off topic: is there a lefty oriented game already (RPG or video)? It would be really fun to storytell something like that... I have some activist friends here who also play RPG but we're kinda limited to what's available (and i'm not into DnD myself but was hooked with WoD, especially VtM and VtDA).

The short answer is "not really". Certainly there aren't any lefty videogames I can think of (if anyone mentions red faction they can fuck off) and, aside (possibly) some Indie RPG I've never heard of published by one of the millions of flash-in-the-pan pdf merchents there aren't any explicitly leftist RPGs - but given the nature of RPGs there isn't really a need for it to be specifically leftist, either.

The new World of Darkness, by the way, lends itself a little better to "lefty" themes although in most cases you're still playing a total prick that acts to harm humanity in some fashion in order to survive, or at least be powerful (especially if you're playing a vampire).

Oh, thanks for that.

I get your point. That's why I either become a sewer living Nosferatu or an insane Malkavian. It's fun to roleplay the two. :)

Very much a person after my own heart there. It's a shame the Malkavians don't make a proper appearence in nWoD. The nossies, though, are awesome as ever.
