410 shotgun, bolt action .308, bolt action .22 rifle, semi-auto .22 rifle. I have access to those. And I have shot from all of them.

I like shooting guns.

I've owned several rifles and pistols in the past. For a couple of years I worked next to a pistol range. I spent plenty lunch hours there, and often stopped by after work. The (inexpensive and good) rifle range was a bit out of the way, but I was practicing there once a month or so for a couple of years also. Later, I enlisted in the Army and got some practice with some bigger weapons.

These days, I don't own any firearms. I don't earn enough money to support the hobby. Also, most of the weapons I like aren't legal in this state.

Used to live on a farm, I've had a few Air pistols and an .22 Rifle... nearly got arrested for carrying a single shot Air Pistol on the street (was summoned to court and fined over it still) because of the attitude the government has over here to anything that is gun shaped or may be have possibly been used in a gun in the past. I've had empty bullet casing confiscated from me by the authorities.
I find Guns interesting, when I was younger Janes Guns Recognition Guide used to be like a bible to me, but in this country there's no real need to own one unless you're a Farmer... which I'm not.

One of these L85A2 with a 40mm grenade launcher made by H&K. It fires a 5.56x45 Nato round to effective distance of 500m (and no thats not me in the pic). I was also very effective with one of these.

http://world.guns.ru/sniper/ai-awp762.jpg

This is the L96A2 Arctic warfare. It fires a 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 win) to an effective range of 800 m but I could hit targets up to 1000m (I'm that good). Sadly they took those away when I left the British army. But happily I have one of these.

Which sadly lives in the states and is looked after by my buddy it's a glock 19 chambered for 9mm parabellum effective to about 150m.

Guns are very sexy. I dont own a gun, but ive shot a bunch of em several times: .45, .38 and .50 cal revolvers (the .50 didnt have a muzzle brake), 9mm glock, scoped .22 bolt action rifle and shotguns. Im a decent shot with the 9mm and scoped .22. Spending time down at the shooting range is simply hella fun!

I don't own any weapons but I've shot quite a few, all handguns: H&K USP (can accommodate various calibers, I was using .40 cal S&W ammunition at the time), Glock 19 9mm, Glock 23 .40 cal, Sig Sauer P226 (can accommodate various calibers, I was using 9mm at the time), Colt P1976 .44 cal. As you can see, I've used mostly small caliber stuff, but I did all this shooting in this small town back home at an indoor range where they didn't allow most rifles because the velocity of the rounds were too high for their building. There was a rifle range, but it was like 45 minutes away so I never actually got my shit together to go out there. I've always had a jones for H&K's MR762 and ArmaLite's AR-10A4 (both 7.62's), though.

I have a .22 that we modified the fuck out of to make it all tacticool, as well as a Yugoslavian SKS that has fucking grenade launcher sights and a bayonet, and then a shotgun and an M44 from World War 2, as well as a Mauser that was also used in WW2. The bit where you put your hand to hold the gun while aiming is a little worn down, as if it was used a lot, which is interesting I thought.

Own: .223, .22 pistol, 12 gauge pump shotgun.

Have shot: .38 Special, 9MM, 44 Magnum, M1 Garand, AR-15, AK-47, 30-06, and a .50 caliber rifle.

I shot the .50 caliber rifle after appearing in court in West Texas. My bail bondsman took me and some of the other people who were tried that day out into the desert, and we pretty much drank beer and shot a massive military-grade rifle for a good part of the day (it's just too bad that the ammo is so expensive). Only in Texas...

Not to be egotistical or anything, but I'm an excellent shot. I can shoot a wine cork from 75 yards away. :thumbup1:

nice. i've thought about getting a mosin nagant. they come pretty cheap these days, i've seen them for $99. i'm not looking forward to getting the cosmoline off though - every method i've read about sounded like a real pain in the ass. did you look up the serial number to see where yours came from? while the M44 could easily have a lot of amazing history of use during wwii, an M1891 would be even cooler in my opinion; there's an off chance that an old enough one (wwi era or earlier) would have seen service in the russian civil war.

an SKS would be pretty cool as well.

The NRA is a racist organization that all but officially opposes gun rights for African Americans and other minorities. Enough said.

Gun rights, in my mind, mean that the people should have the right to arm themselves against their oppressors.

I don't really think they do. All their publications that I've read support the right of minorities to have guns, I believe they even responded to claims by some liberal group once on that subject. Can you provide a source, MRD?

Just a question though - if you have to live in a world where people are killing animals for meat, wouldn't you prefer that they actually go out and hunt it themselves, as opposed to buying it from some disgusting factory? If they hunt, they are putting their own sweat and blood into their efforts as opposed to just walking to the store, and they are more likely to appreciate what they're doing.

*shrug* I don't know - I used to be a vegan, and that's always how I felt about it.

Anyways, about guns. I've never shot one, but I'd like to learn how and own a gun for self defense purposes.

Owning a gun is very difficult here. Very difficult. Need a license to own one, which requires lots of background checks. Not only this, there are heavy restrictions on use and keeping of firearms. For example, if you have a gun in your home, it must be kept in a safe with any ammunition stored in a seperate safe with a different key. If you think it's a silly rule, think again. They do regular checks of your home. Loaded or unloaded you can't carry a gun on the street. Etc etc. No fucking chance of owning an assult rifle or other heavy shit like you can get in the states, only pistols and hunting rifles/shotguns are allowed, I think.

More hassle than it's worth. I'd like to learn to shoot though.

Nic.

That's just it: the world need not be that way! In ancient times, yeah, hunting was another thing. But today humanity has developed the capacity to survive without killing animals for food. Hence there is no good reason to do so. Why continue to kill animals just because we can? Half of those who go hunting don't even do so under the guise of consuming the flesh of their hunt; they just go out killing "for the sport of it". What a sport! I wonder what they'd say if they were on the other end of the barrel "for the sport of it"!

I'm living proof that you don't have to eat meat to live in today's world, or at least in today's developed world. I'm a vegetarian and may soon become a vegan. I think if we're aiming for a better kind of world, then we should uphold the corresponding morality. The world I'm aiming for is one of total liberation, not just human liberation.

Zeekloid wrote:

Look to their history. Even look to the 1960s. When the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was organized centrally around this issue (although eventually around a much broader array of issues, and toward revolutionary objectives), the NRA stood in the way all the way on the grounds that it was a criminal organization, so its members had no right to bear arms, as it turned out. Whilst the NRA can't politically get away with opposing gun rights for minorities anymore, they do so today in practice under the guise of opposing gun possession on the part of 'criminals' and the 'mentally unstable', etc.

I do enjoy shooting, although I don't get to do it often as I would like (once a week at most). My Springfield M1A (civilian M14) is my favorite rifle. It took me some time to finally get one, though, as these rifles are not cheap and even the ammo is a bit under 50 cents apiece at best (German surplus 7.62X51mm, cheap Wolf .308, etc.). But it is definitely worth it.

There are plenty of reasons to continue killing animals. Animals are a good source of protein, plus they taste good. There's two good reasons right there.

Half of those who go hunting don't even do so under the guise of consuming the flesh of their hunt; they just go out killing "for the sport of it".

That's not really true. Plenty of people in rural communities hunt and fish for food, which they also then give out to family and friends.

I wonder what they'd say if they were on the other end of the barrel "for the sport of it"!

If I was a deer, for example? Probably not much, as deer aren't really capable of abstract thought. I remember pulling up to five blacktail deer on a small island once (I was in a skiff) and shooting two of them. Know what the other deer did? Absolutely nothing. In fact one of the remaining three sniffed one of the dead deer before trotting off.

The world I'm aiming for is one of total liberation, not just human liberation.

I couldn't care less about "animal liberation".

I would imagine that most people who have seen movies would know how to use a gun. It's not very hard, lol.

Fill a clip with shells, put the clip in the gun, jack a shell into the chamber, take the safety off, pull the trigger. That's usually all there is to it.

agreed; "animal liberation" is for those who have the luxury to afford expensive vegetarian food, or at least have good sources of protein where others may not--basically, it's for the rich and is a past time of the rich to support such groups.

I'm not saying I'm against animal rights--I believe animals should be treated humanly as possible whenever possible--but for us to deny a completely valid source of protein is ridiculous, esp. considering it's not as if the animal goes to waste.
