So my latest DIY project has been to install a window box at my apartment. Three issues made the process more difficult. First, the ledge is smooth and sloped so the box needed to secured somehow. This leads to the second and third problems; there no frame to speak of on the window so i couldn't hang it from the sill itself also I cannot drill and even if I could, drilling in brick is tricky. First i tried a shower rod which held for less than a day, luckily the planter was not lost. Failing that, I resorted to ingenuity and used some bungies I dumpstered and some zip/cable ties stolen from work to rig this multiply redundent system, i drilled the holes for the zip ties with a hot paper clip.. The soil was stolen from work and the succlents are either gifts of cuttings stolen from the garden's of my bourgeois clients.

We'll I volunteer at a local urban farm that grows produce and herb to give away. Additionally it is pretty windy window so that is a consideration which steered me away from edible plants. Not pictured are chives and oregano in a pot in another window.

First, props for an awesome window box!
Second, you need to seriously secure that thing before cops knock at your door after it put some person into a coma. Can you get your hands some rubber cement? Just lacquer the bottom of it up and let dry? Or perhaps you could cut some more holes into the box itself and hook it to the interior of the window somehow? This way the box itself would be hooked on, rather than the cords which hold the box.
Last idea, you could get a wooden box and saw off the back wall, as well as the side walls and simply fix the window box into the bottom of the wooden box, then attach the wooden box the window sill thereby allowing better security and possibly even a larger growing space?

Cheers,
- August

My bad, the high levels of snark on revleft make me overly suspicious.

Your squat sounds sweet. I am more of a woodsy/wilderness cabin squating kind of guy. The one i have my eye on has a stone sink, three woodstoves, wall mounted propane light and propane stove, a loft and attached woodshed with an outhouse 20 feet away. Squating that is a long term goal, cleaning out the mouse shit is a short term one.

I am pretty sure that this thing is secure, my window box. I say pretty because i recognize anything could happen but i would be surprised if it failed.

Fancy making a step by step guide for this Redson? :)

Btw, is that UPVC windows that they're fixed to?

OK
1) Earn money selling labor power
2)go to hardware store and buy window box or find suitable item to reuse
3) collect soil and cuttings/plants and assemble materials at installation site
4)put planter on sill, fill with soil, insert cuttings into the soil's port.
5) stretch a bungie across the window with your hands and attach the hooks to the window sill with your hands.
6)still using your hands, loop a second bungie around the planter, which you may need to hold with you hands to prevent from falling, attaching on either side to the other bungies. let go of everything once all bungies are installed.
7) find a butane lighter by looking with your eyes and ignite it by pushing down on the round wheel and turning it back towards the paddle quickly, and depress paddle using your finger. If not ignited repeat. insert pointy metal object like a paper clip into flame until hot, then melt holes in the rim of the planter, one on both ends on the side closest to the first bungie. repeat until you can insert the end of a cable tie and attach the box to the bungie.
8. insert minature found objects in soil port.

upvc? looks like plasticized metal.
