Maoists seize private land

KAMAL PANTHI
BARDIYA, JUN 20 -

UCPN (Maoist) activists captured about 91 hectares of private land in Bardiya’s Sorahawa VDC on Saturday.

Activists of the Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Farmers’ Association-Revolutionary and All Nepal Squatters’ Association seized the land belonging to eight locals. They announced the seizure by putting up party flags amid a function.

According to Inspector Bir Bahadur Oli of Area Police Post Mainapokhar, the Maoists seized the land belonging to Suryaman Shrestha, Drabyaman Shrestha, Bijayaman Pati, Gaya Prasad Kurmi, Begam Maiya, Dhrubaman Shrestha, Bhutaha Kurmi and Gopalman Pati. A joint team of Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force removed the flags from the land the same night, he said.

Maoist activists claimed they captured the land since the landlords had forced tillers out of it. Maoist youth wing- Young Communist League-has set up a temporary camp nearby.

Sources said the Maoists were preparing to capture more land in the area accusing owners of attempting to sell the land. Maoist District In-charge Kabir said the landless people had seized the land as the owners tried to prevent them from cultivating it. “The have-nots, who have long been tilling the land, captured some 700 hectares in the district,” he said.

About a month ago, the Maoists captured some 50 hectares of private land in Daulatpur VDC in Rajapur Tappu area. VDC secretary Chuda Bahadur Somai said in Manau, 85 hectares of land was in Maoist control. Owners said the cadres had prevented them from selling the land. The Maoist activists have started community farming there.
