View Full Version : The BP Cover-UP

In light of the events taking place on the Gulf Coast, a series of events & information that was once hidden in the dark has now revealed itself for the world to see. Ranging from profit scams, broken safety protocols, to even misleading oil spill coverages, we continue to step away from the shadows that BP pulled over our heads from day 1. The information I am brining forth to you are all from what has happened so far. So, even after you read this, it is up to you to continue to uncover more that is to come. If anything, this is just the beginning.

What does Tony know that we don't?
I remember watching CNN one night, & Anderson Cooper was doing his daily coverages on the BP disaster. Cooper, out of all his extensive coverage in being the whistle blower, he did a tiny segment on BP Chief Tony Hayward, which only lasted for a minute or two. What was shown was Hayward getting in a plane with fellow BP exectutives, smiling as if he was having a great time. Cooper had then stated, "is there something that Tony knows that we don't?" Where Cooper was initially going with this is unclear, but my guess would be on how much money Tony saved for himself before the disaster. Just a month before the oil spill Tony had cashed in a third of his holdings in the company.[1] His pay package was said to have been around £4 million a year, in which he then paid off the mortage on his family's mansion in Kent, which was estimated to be valued at more than £1.2 million.[2] Now, whether Tony had knowledge of the coming disaster beforehand is unclear, but fact of the matter is that his share sale decision allowed him to avoid losing more than £423,000 when BP's share price plunged due to the oil spill.[3]

Money was saved, but lives were lost
If one can remember back enough, the Gulf Coast found itself fighting against Hurricane Ida. Because of this, BP found itself in a position, within many weeks, of having to go by a late drilling schedule, costing them up to $500,000 each day overdue.[4] This became a problem for BP, & because of their greed, they couldn't let this to continue. BP started cutting risky corners by downgrading well designs & safety device installations. These "money saving" shortcuts saved them around $7-10 million. When asked about there shortcuts, BP official commented, "who cares, it's done, end of story, will probably be fine."[5] Then reports started coming in stating that BP also failed to fully circulate drilling mud because of the shortcuts made. This was supposed to be a 12 hour procedure that helps detect gas pockets, which is what shot up the well & exploded on the drilling rig.[6] Out of everthing that took place, a BP engineer ended up describing the last 6 days before the rig explosion as a "nightmare".[7]

Was BP a lone wolf?
Reports come in & out about the BP disaster being the worst seen within US history, but is it the worst seen globally? A few years back, certain news came to light about how Texaco, who is now owned by Chevron, was deliberately dumping 16-18 billion gallons of toxic waste in the Amazon rainforest during its ownership from 1964-1990.[8] To this day, Chevron still faces up to more than $27 million for poisoning an area that is said to be the size of Rhode Island with 18.5 billion gallons of toxic "produced water", which is calculated to be more than 474 times the amount of contamination than the BP disaster.[9] Why BP is gaining more spotlight than the Chevron incident is beyond me, but it just shows that BP is not a lone wolf when it comes to disasters such as the one we see today.

Sarah Palin's Continuous Diatribe
Within our current political spectrum, if anyone knows anything about Alaska, it would be something on Sarah Palin. If anyone knows anything about Sarah Palin, it would be on her & her husband's connection with the Alaskan oil rigs & any other oil rig in which she finds herself being a beneficiary of said oil rigs. Due to the recent BP oil spill & with millions of dollars being lost, coming out of the wallets of those that benefit from oil production, Sarah Palin decided to come out & have her say on the current situation. Palin had stated blame on what she calls "extreme 'environmentalists'" for the BP disaster, all because they push for tougher drilling regulations, in which, according to her, forces oil companies to explore deeper offshore, leaving them at higher risks.[10] Though, Palin wasn't letting BP off the hook either apparently. She ended up stating that we shouldn't trust BP because of it being a foreign oil company, even though her own husband once worked for BP for 18 years.[11] One things for sure though, with her pinning blame on environmentalists for oil rig disasters & her making sure that the oil rig(s) that she benefits from remains on a competitive edge against BP, Palin will find herself profiting a lot off of the competitive market system.

What do the oil industries have in common?
Just recently, CNN has brought to light exposing details on the level of deceit, not just BP has gotten away with over the years, but other major oil companies as well. Rep. Ed Markey ended up calling out & started demanding answers from the executives of BP, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, & Shell Oil.[12] What was being called out just makes the situation even more disturbing, such as misleading errors in which their emergency dealing plans reference walruses within the Gulf Coast to be protected by BP, despite the fact that walruses havn't lived on the Gulf Coast for at least 3 million years.[13] They've also given reference to a Marine Biologist who died 5 years ago in 2005.[14] The Senion House Democrats ended up releasing a 500 page binder from ExxonMobil, detailing their emergency dealing plans, in which they point out its "cookie-cutter" similarities to BP's plans to deal with emergencies.[15] Other similar plans have been uncovered as well on fellow oil industries Chevron, ConocoPhillips, & Shell Oil, in which they call for the failed procedures such as blowout preventers & top kill.[16] Before the uncovering of these documents, ExxonMobil, along with the other oil industries, stated that they would've treated the present situation much differently than BP did, but since then, they've now stated that they're not able to handle the worst-case scenario.[17]

The oil leak coverage
During the media reportings & BP reportings from BP officials of late April, estimations were constantly coming in, saying that around 1,000 barrels of oil was gushing out per day, which is equivalent to 42,000 gallons of oil per day.[18] Though, as June came around, we come to find the "1,000 per day" estimation to be an absolute lie. As new readings are being brought to light, it is now being stated that around 35-60,000 barrels of leaked oil is gushing out in the Gulf Coast.[19] Although these remain as rough estimates, it has also been stated that we could see around 80,000 to start gushing out by mid-July.[20]

Indies reveal a cover-up?
As mainstream estimations have now helped us debunk BP's earlier estimations, are we now free from the deceit? I would say hardly not. In fact, there could be a possibility of a deliberate cover-up taking place with the help of those within the White House. It was revealed that the US Department of the Interior had intentionally misrepresented the results of a survey taken in order to minimize the scope of the disaster.[21] The Interior Department stated that around 12-19,000 barrels of oil was leaking into the Gulf Coast per day. These results came from a survey that was conducted by the National Incident Command's Flow Rate Technical Group, which consists of government scientists & university representatives all across the US.[22]

In reality, though, the scientists conducting the study stated that their findings were only the "lower bounds" of estimations. Meaning that, at the very least, it could be 12-19,000. "Upper bounds" estimations were not yet conducted, but was stated that they could be "significantly larger".[23] The Interior declared, though, that the estimation of 12-19,000 represents both the "lower & upper boundaries", meaning that 19,000 was the highest it was getting according to them.[24] Though, as independent studies come in, one has to wonder if the newly found estimations are still a bit misleading. Independent studies by Purdue University have estimated the size of the spill to be as large as 84,000 barrels per day. Another independent study was made by Professor Chiang at the University of California, Berkeley, who found the size of the oil spill to be close to around 100,000 barrels per day.[25]

Under the Clean Water Act, we begin to see the motive for such deliberate misreprensentations. Under said act, the company faces civil fines of up to $4,300 for every barrel that leaks out. If we were to go by BP's original estimation, 1,000 barrels, they could lose $215 million for the first 50 days. Though, if we go by the independent studies, which is far more realistic, then BP could face up to hundreds of billions in civil fines.[26]

The workers in a time of need
Because of the mass spillage of oil, due to the BP disaster, many workers have been hired by BP to help clean up the mess. Though, the workers that were hired by BP to help clean up the area have reported serious health problems, ranging from chest pains, severe headaches, breathing problems, dizziness & nosebleeds.[27] It doesn't help the fact that those same workers spend hours upon hours working in oil contaminated waters.[28] On Wednesday of June 2nd, 125 boats that were coming in from the Breton Sound area of Louisiana were recalled to shore because of health complaints by the workers.[29] Hired BP worker, George Jackson, complained of burning eyes, headaches, & nausea. He ended up stating, "They [BP officials] told us if we ran into oil, it wasn't supposed to bother us".[30] Though, BP have continued to ignore instructions from the EPA on safety protocols. The EPA has even failed to take any kind of action because of such as well.[31] To make things worse, BP Chief, Tony Hayward, has even refused to accept any responsibility for the symptoms reported by BP hired workers.[32] The workers need our help!

So what are we to do? Well, like I said earlier, even after you read this, it is still up to all of you to uncover what is still left in the dark. It is our duty to be the whistle blowers on corruption. We could be wrong, & we could be right. But we'll never know until we speak out. I would argue 'til the day I die that the recent situation we are facing today is because of capitalism of its entirety. Though, for the sake of argument, it's best to first understand that this situation is one of the many flaws of unregulated capitalism. If we continue to allow these well-funded corporations to run things the way they want, then someday, soon, we'll find ourselves at the very brink of destruction. I hope the mass of people wake up soon, because if not, then I fear of what is to come.

Red Love & Salutes!
