The crisis and the struggles are not confined to Greece

The International Communist Current is organising a public forum on the new wave of austerity attacks facing workers across of the world. There will be a particular focus on the situation in Greece for two reasons: the bankruptcy of the Greek state is not an exceptional case but indicates the future facing states everywhere as the world capitalist economy plunges to unprecedented depths. Consequently the austerity package being imposed on the Greek workers is serving as a kind of model for the ruling class in many other countries. At the same time, the Greek working class, as it begins to actively resist these measures, is providing workers throughout Europe and the rest of the globe with an example both of the necessity to struggle on a massive level and of the difficulties it faces in taking that struggle forward.

At this forum, therefore, we will be discussing some of the very concrete issues posed by the struggles in Greece, and those beginning to take shape in Spain, China, and elsewhere. How can workers take charge of their own strikes and demonstrations, and escape the stifling grip of the unions and left parties? How can workers respond to state repression – what is and what isn’t class violence? What is the role of militant minorities and revolutionary organisations within the wider movement? How can workers and revolutionaries express their solidarity with struggles in other countries?

This is a discussion that is of relevance to all internationalist revolutionaries. We hope that groups and individuals who are genuinely in favour of working class internationalism and self-organisation will participate in the meeting. As at previous ICC forums in London, we think that it will be appropriate to discuss the possibility of creating structures where internationalists can come together to discuss and, where possible, carry out common activities. Faced with an increasingly generalised and brutal attack on workers’ living standards, there is a growing need for workers to come together – to discuss, reflect, and act. The same need applies to the revolutionary minorities.

Invitations to this meeting are being sent to the Communist Workers Organisation, Anarchist Federation, Solidarity Federation, ‘Occupied London’ blog and The Commune as well as various individuals, but all are welcome.
