One of the biggest arguments against communism/anarchism is "it's against human nature", "people are too lazy" ect. I think the only way to PROVE this wrong is giving them a concrete example of such society. Was Catalonia in the 30's or some other (Paris commune?) place in the world anarchist enough to show people communism/anarchism works? Did the economy function the way it's supposed function in a communist society? Has there been societies where people have contributed to the society even if they didn't "have to"?

I know in the Spanish civil war the soldiers didn't have to fight but they did anyway. I'd like to see if this has happened in normal "every day life".

Good book recommendations are also appreciated! Which is the best book about life in anarchist Catalonia (not the war itself).

I hope I made my self clear:rolleyes:

There is much debate as to wether things 'worked' in catalonia. What is clear is that there were a lot of problems but also a lot of things 'miracalously' worked out well. I think small problems are to be expected when all companies in an area, during wartime, change their entire board of directors at once ;)

So I think Cataluny/Other spanish regions are the best example. Still, every example that comes even near has endured and eventually collapsed under severe war-stress, which kinda rules them out as standard 'test-cases'. I think there's one book with first-hand accounts, written in 1975 after Franco's death, that talks quite good about the economy in the time. I forgot the title, but I believe it was made through a cooperation by the BBC and a dutch tv-network.

Another thing that went wrong in Catalonia was the collectivisation beeing carried out by different groups, who still competed and boycotted each other. (Anarchists, Trots and M-L's)
