The Economic Transformation of the Soviet Union by Davies et al is an excellent work that uses hard figures to cover the economic history of the USSR. I'm a fan and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in more than simply the politics of the period
I found the following link online that provides a chapter of the book that deals with the population movements of the early USSR and particularly the period of Stalin's reforms. Obviously its a controversial subject and this work is slightly outdated but its still worth reading. Enjoy.
