I'm quitting drinking. I'm starting to fuck things up with myself and my friends, so I'm done. Just felt like sharing with you all.

Me too. Well, not completely, but I have certainly cut my alcohol intake right down. Alcohol gets me into too much trouble with people.

Good luck.

Doing the same. I pissed off a good friend of mine the other day and have been annoying the rest of them with my excess drinking. Just had an awful first night's sleep without alcohol after having drank every night two months prior.

Thank you and this is the first time. @ Tsukae, keep it up and good luck. I've been drinking every night since January.

I just feel like my drinking has become a problem. I'm going to quit for little while and then limit myself to drinking a couple times a week. No reason to be doing it every night.

Well, the old AA cliche is that if you think you might have a problem then you probably do, so good luck. My only alcohol problem, however, is that I can't afford the good stuff.

If you find it helpful you can try a substitution, for example, suddenly become a vitamic C fanatic, go drink a large bottle of fruit juice.

i'm in the luxury postition that for some reason its completly impossible for me to get addicted to anything (and darwin knows i used copious amounts of a bunch of addictive stuff over ttime) so i dont realy know how it is to have to kick an habbit but again, good luck to you.

I thought they said that the first sign of a drinking problem is denying you have one?

No, because not everyone who drinks has a problem, so it would follow that not everyone who denies having a drinking problem is lying. AA's not nearly as absolutist as one might at first think. What you're thinking of is a mutated form of the first of the 12 steps: Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.

Edit: The reason I know all of this is because I've gone to more than one NA/AA meeting with friends who were in need of moral support.

Either way, good luck. I'm quitting smoking right now.

I already fucked up. I've been drinking a bunch of whiskey tonight. I know my goal was not to quit, but to just cut down. In the end I only went a couple of nights without drinking. Pathetic right? Hopefully I can fix this whole deal. I need to seriousl fix my alcohol addiction since itdirectly affects my friends.

Tsukae, how many drinks do you have every 24 hours mate? I'm not sure whether this would be helpful but if you have, for example, 2 or 3 every day you could try cut down to 1 or 2 for a week or two, then the next three weeks try just having 1 and then cut down to one every two or three days and eventually give up altogether.

I did something similar with coffee and it worked. Giving it up all at once is a real *****. I know, I know, it's coffee, but I guess the principle is the same. :)

That's a good idea, but I don't necessarily make drinks. I just get a glass and fill it up with either vodka, whiskey, or whatever else I might have. If I had to divide it into shots I would say anywhere from 3 to 6. This isn't as bad as it sounds as my tolerance is pretty high from drinking so much.

I've topped out at about 10 before I had to call it a night but those were the 330ml bottles so it doesn't really count.

my drinking rule is to only drink a glass with your friends. no one may drink if they do not toast with each other. also anti-social do get drunk alone.

It's hard to give up anything you enjoy doing, regardless of if it's harmful to you and you're conscious of that. I doubt you have an addiction problem.
Maybe you should consider just having a couple beers with a group of friends, then calling it a night.

I threw all my liquor, whiskey &c away two weeks ago.

I have been drinking wine with dinner since I was about 12, but from 16 on it just got worse (starting the liquor). 18 and I severely cut back on the number of bottles, but the habit stayed.

So now I'm not saying "no" to alcohol, but saying no to anything but wine. As a child, I was never allowed to drink lemonade/coke &c, so I'm just reintroducing myself to the habit of drinking water during the day and wine with dinner and tea during the evening.

Don't feel bad about the smoking and eating. If you really have a serious drinking problem - and you have decided that you do - what they'll do to you is nothing compared to what a lifetime of untreated alcoholism will.

I'm told you're not really sober until you've quite smoking as well. It's an interesting theory and I'll let you know when I find out.

Keep strong. Talk to people. Take walks. Eat well, take vitamins and fish oil caplets. And torrent a bunch of movies to watch.

I don't want to get into the "bourgeois liquids debate," but just because wine does have a status symbol (or whatever) doesn't mean it is inherently bourgoisie.

I dont see why there needs to be a moralizing of the drinking of alcohol. I see nothing wrong with gettin your drank on, as long as it doesnt harm your social relationships or work/school life. On the other hand, if you cant control your drinking, then you should most definitely cut down or even quit.

I think drinking is great! It makes me happy when other people enjoy it. Just not my thing, really, as I found out the hard way by wrecking most of my personal relationships and pissing away several years of my life. Getting moralistic about it is the enemy of healthy social drinking or recovery.
