Unfortunately, you as a foreign comrades is very difficult to understand from a few books on Mao Zedong. Is a collection of Mao Zedong's political thought in China for thousands of great people. He will write Chinese poetry, and is very romantic, full of feelings of optimism of revolutionary struggle. So, I think this is quite difficult.

If you want to understand Maoism as it is today, I'd recommend regularly reading the stuff posted on Kasama. (kasamaproject.org)

The Battle for China's Past by Mobo Gao is an excellent analysis of the Cultural Revolution too.

Yes! And it can't hurt to flip through the Little Red Book (skip around for what interests you) and Directives Regarding the Cultural Revolution - they're both on marxists.org

Too simple, sometimes naive.

In addition to the above (especially Kasama) I recommend these good works for an understanding of Maoism:

Quotations from Chairman Mao http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/works/red-book/index.htm
and then The MLM Revolutionary Study Group's document on the Cultural Revolution http://www.mlmrsg.com/attachments/049_049_CRpaper-Final.pdf

Most important is to learn the history, how these ideas worked in practice. There's one or 2 good documentaries and history books around, but much of it is reactionary garbage. A great documentary is 'the Passion of the Mao' which I can link you too if you like ?

And the 'selected works' of Mao are pretty good but so long (i still havnt finished reading them:().. These are, I think, best ones to read to get a good idea of Mao's ideas -
On Guerilla Warfare http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/works/1937/guerrilla-warfare/index.htm
On Practice http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-1/mswv1_16.htm
On Contradiction http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-1/mswv1_17.htm
On the Correct Handlings of Contradictions Among the People http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-5/mswv5_58.htm
Where do Correct Ideas Come from http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-9/mswv9_01.htm
On New Democracy http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-2/mswv2_26.htm
On Khruschev's Phony Communism http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/works/1964/phnycom.htm
He didn't do any major works in the GPCR although it was a major event. http://www.marxistsfr.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-9/mswv9_84.htm is a nice collection of statements made tho. Still the MLMRSG thing is probably better for an intro

Kasama represents at best a Maoism, it is by no means a final authority on what Maoism is today. Personally, I find certain aspects of their analysis inexplicably dated, rigid, and sectarian. In particular, their infantile anti-Stalinism and weak-kneed anti-imperialism are where their origins in dogmatic Avakianism really shines through. On balance, I guess you could say they put out an interesting and provocative website, which is a good thing, as far as that goes.

To OP: Read the primary sources people suggest. Then read secondary sources. Be critical. But actually, the strength of Mao's philosophy is that it is an unparalleled aid to actual practice, so to really get Maoism I suggest doing both in tandem.
