This has been done in Switzerland for some time and has proven very successful. The fact is that carefully controlled doses of clean heroin to addicts under supervision have minimal impact on long terms health allowing them to recover their health as well as other aspects of their lives. The way current drug policy allows addicts to waste away physically in addition to the other associated problems is criminal.

Bare in mind of course that this kind of treatment works best for long term users who cannot give up. Methadone remains better for recently addicted people with high physical but lower psychological dependency.

Same goes here in Amsterdam, since we Started a program like this for those addicts who have no chance ever becoming clean, their health has gone up so far that now we have to build special elderlyhomes for them and drugaddict related crime (stealing bikes, streetrobbery,petty theft) has gone down dramatically.
