View Full Version : I think I have Asperger's syndrome

but I don't really know for sure. I started to think I was, and I took some online tests (like the AQ (Autistic Quotient) test) and I tested positive. the diagnostic criteria seem to fit me, but not all....

I would often say I have social anxiety disorder to explain the social problems I have. but maybe it is deeper than that.

It could just be that the symptoms of social anxiety disorder are similar, but over the past few days I have read so much on the Internet about the life experiences of people with Asperger's and I relate so much.

Firstly, be careful with online tests and self-diagnosis. If you feel like you might have AS, and are concerned in any way by it, go and see a doctor.

Secondly, a lot of personality types, traits and disorders have symptoms and features similar to syndromes on the autistic spectrum, so like you said, the symptoms may be similar to social anxiety.

There is a whole spectrum of autism related neurological disorders to be sure consult a doctor.

Probably you might have Pdd-nos like i do.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) is a pervasive developmental disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pervasive_developmental_disorder) (PDD)/autism spectrum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_spectrum) disorder (ASD). While those with it have some characteristics of disorders on the autistic spectrum, they don't fit the diagnostic criteria of any of the other disorders thereon. While PDD-NOS shares similarities with autism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism), it tends to be milder.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDD-NOS#cite_note-0) PDD-NOS is sometimes referred to as "atypical autism" by autism specialists. The boundaries between it and non-autistic conditions are not fully resolved.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDD-NOS#cite_note-1)
In the proposed DSM-V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disord ers), PDD-NOS would disappear, and be replaced by Autism Spectrum Disorder.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDD-NOS#cite_note-2)
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=PDD-NOS&action=edit&section=1)] Characteristics

Individuals diagnosed with PDD-NOS might have difficulties socializing, repetitive behaviors, and be oversensitive to certain stimuli. In their interaction with others they might struggle to maintain eye contact, appear unemotional, or appear to be unable to speak. They may also have difficulty transitioning from one activity to another.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDD-NOS#cite_note-3)

Lots of people think they have Apsergers, it's best to get a professional diagognosis; not least because that's the only way you can claim any kind of disability assitance with it :p

The guy behind the Aspie-quiz holds a belief in a crackpot theory that asperger's somehow is related to Neanderthal genes. He's also a racist.

I also think i suffer a form of autism. My mother suggested i might have suffered from it and it was when she showed me the symtopms of AS on Wikipedia that i saw this

"Hans Asperger's initial accounts[1] and other diagnostic schemes[33] include descriptions of physical clumsiness. Children with AS may be delayed in acquiring skills requiring motor dexterity, such as riding a bicycle or opening a jar, and may seem to move awkwardly or feel "uncomfortable in their own skin". They may be poorly coordinated, or have an odd or bouncy gait or posture, poor handwriting, or problems with visual-motor integration.[1][5] They may show problems with proprioception (sensation of body position) on measures of apraxia (motor planning disorder), balance, tandem gait, and finger-thumb apposition. There is no evidence that these motor skills problems differentiate AS from other high-functioning ASDs.[1]"

And for me that sealed the deal. I've struggled with my walk since my childhood.
On top of the social retardation, emotional coldness and my obsessiveness/the inability to "let things go" i came to this conclusion. That's not to say that i haven't overcome all these things. I am a happy 20 year old with a lovely girlfriend and a good bunch of friends. But these things will continue to haunt me and i will continue to persevere!
My favourite part of it all is that i lack "Tact" which makes for really funny outbursts. I never sugarcoat it.

I echo RA's call: go see a doctor and get some proper testing.

After testing 'highly likely' on the Aspies quiz I tried to get a diagnosis, but i recieved a letter from my GP saying that no one in Northern Ireland is qualified to diagnose Aspies.

What the fuck? One would think that any competent psychologist would be able to make a diagnosis.

you'd think that, but probably due to inexperience and/or ignorance on the part of the local health authority they arent used to dealing with autism and other NNT disorders.

Doctors here sometimes have quite a stubborn reactionary view and would tend to dismiss autism as ''ach he's just thick!''. I was even greeted by my GP with no absence of cynicism when i explained why i was there being greeted by a gruff sigh and a filthy look. When i was a kid i was even told by another doctor that i wasnt asthmatic and that it was all in my head despite the fact i was coughing my chest up every night.

Maybe my doctor was really namby-pamby or something because I was on asthma meds for most of my childhood (the bit of it I spent in England, apparently it can clear up if you bugger off to live in the tropics) but I don't even remember suffering from any of the symptoms.
