What do we think of post-punk music? Personally I love it. This era largely represented an experimental disregard for musical conventions and also (in Britian), reflected a lot of the discontent felt towards the Thatcher government.

Here's a couple of my favourite post-punk tracks:

Gang of Four - Damaged Goods http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb1lGaj1gJ8

Public Image LTD - Memories http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1znRWkDXzY

The Smiths, The Cure, Swans, The Birthday Party, Gang of Four, Siouxsie and the Banshees, This Heat, Joy Division, New Order... all good post-punk bands. I highly recommend Swans for those looking for very different music. I recommend The Smiths for anyone who thinks he is a proficient rhythm guitarist.

The Ben G - yes, the Sisters (and Goth in general) qualify as post-Punk.

Excellent. In that case, Bauhaus rocks my bedroom.

I love Swans, they are one of my favorite bands.

I suggest the album called "Soundtracks for the Blind" by them. It is like a long journey to somewhere heavy and beautiful, with some neurotic friends as your companions. Swans have covered many styles though, and they have some more accessible stuff of course.

Wow. The Swans are Fantastic. They seem to have more in common with Godflesh then the Smiths.

One of the greatest bands ever. Check out their live record "Public Castration Is A Good Idea". It's insanely heavy and punishing but at the same time, very cathartic.

The Smiths are really good. I used to hate them, but I actually started to listen to them and I can't stop.

I like Morrissey's solo stuff just a tad bit more but the Smiths were pretty much flawless. If they never recorded "Golden Lights", I could say they never recorded a bad song.

Zounds. I have posted about them before, I think. They are sometimes inappropriately lumped in with anarcho-punk, because they were on Crass's label. They were anarchists too. However, their sounds is much more post-punk/new wave. They weren't that prolific, but The Curse of Zounds LP has pretty much all their best stuff on it.

edit: for some reason i can't get the youtube embedding function to work, but above is a link to one of their songs.

Yikes. That's a hell of a thing to admit to adults.

Whatever. Some of his best lyrics were written post-Smiths.

The Smith's are a post-punk bank now?

I think they're generally classed as "new wave". Personally, I love Joy Division. And generally a lot of stuff on Factory Records is pretty cool. I like Bauhaus too, Echo and the Bunnymen, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, New Order, that kind of thing. One of my favourite post-punk bands has to be Coldplay. And there is sort of revival in this sort of style of music, in well-known(ish) bands such as the Editors, who aren't great IMO, but it's demonstrated better in the Horrors, who are fantastic.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0YwN_NunfAI also like Siouxie and the Banshees. And on the topic of post-punk, I really like some of the art and album covers etc. used. It sort of abandoned the tackiness and garishness of punk in favour of a much more subtler style. For example, the famous cover of Closer, and also of Joy Divisions first album Unknown Pleasures is actually a slightly edited picture of some mountain contours or something found in a geography textbook, or something like that. And there's also Nick Cave who drew some of his album artwork and whatnot.

Edit:
I like Morrissey's solo stuff just a tad bit more I find Morissey's solo stuff quite dull next to the Smiths, it's just basically the Smiths without Johnny Marr, and Johnny was the other good half of the Smiths.

I don't know what you've heard of Morrissey's solo stuff but it is nothing like the Smiths. No jangly guitars or anything like that.

I've seen them described as "post-punk". I've also seen them described as "indie rock" and "jangle pop". Bottom line, it doesn't really matter.

Therefore, a band with just Morrissey, and no Johnny = lack of jangly guitars. Having said that, I agree, the two styles of Morrissey's solo career next to the Smiths are quite distinctly different.

A Smiths without Marr is like a Russia without its Lenin.

Foreelsyo. Fuck Putin and all who enjoy him. :/
