A definite WTF moment, an unemployed, broke guy living with his dad won the Democratic senate nomination for South Carolina with 59% of the vote. He never gave a speech, didn't even have a website, never campaigned or solicited anyones vote, and apparently he just filed to be on the ballot and nothing else. He is ex-military and is charged with a crime, and is awaiting trial. His main opponent was a several term state senator and former judge with fairly solid establishment credentials who had the backing of just about every democrat in the state. Yet this Alvin Greene, who came out of nowhere, apparently won all but two counties in the entire state.

This is really bizarre, because party nominations are often like real elections. And south carolina is backwards, but it is still a place that's had some form of regular elections with basically near-universal suffrage for the past couple of decades. I'm wondering if comrades have any decent explanation for it. It is also a real slap in the face at leftie politician wannabes who campaign their heart out only to lose the Democratic nomination.

Here's an interesting story about it:

I've heard of this news two, but the cynical side in me is wondering whether the Democratic Primary wasn't infiltrated by wingnuts hoping to make an easy race for a Republican take over of the seat in November.

There's something really bizarre about it... How does an unemployed, broke man shell out $10,000 to get on a ballot for an election? Something is definitely suspicious about the incident.

Definitely odd.

If it was an open primary, then I would not be surprised if republicans flooded it to have an easy election. I usually can't stand Olbermann, but I had to watch the interview on there. It was a complete joke. He had nothing to say, total one word answers. He seems incompetent. IIRC, even the DNC chairman asked him to step down. From what I heard, I don't think he even knows where he stands on the political spectrum.

Oh, god, I love living in South Carolina. Seriously though, I agree he's a GOP plant or something. He's unemployed, yet raises 10k to run for sentate, despite the fact he's facing felony obscenity charges? Either he's completely insane, which could be the case, after seeing that interview, or he's not what he says he is.
