... Opinions regarding the AK series weapons?! Anything from the AK-46 (yeah, it's real) to the AK-108 I guess. Primarily want to know what the opinion of the gun/series is, with some actual arguments, as compared to prettier but notably less reliable western equivalents.

I myself having never shot anything aside from a .45 ACP can't tell you ... but the AK wins in my books :), and not just because it's Soviet! The 5.45 round is much better than the 5.56, and I don't see the use of an M4 when it's jammed. Post away, ja?

Well, the M16/M4 doesn't deserve as much criticism as it gets. Having owned one and also been issued some, I can say that the key is just to keep it cleaned well and not to use bad magazines. When it's well maintained, I would actually prefer an M16 or M4 over an AK.

There are some nice AK's out there. The problem that I have is with the sights. It's a short site radius, and a post-in-notch system. Peep sights with longer radius are much nice and easier to use. The Russian side mount system for optics is nice, though. Also, the selector switch on AK's is not as nice as on M16/M4. Trigger pull usually isn't as good either.

If I couldn't get an M4 with heavier grain bullets (or a FAL), I wouldn't feel under-gunned with an AK. I prefer my AK's in 5.45x39. Recoil is lower. It shoots flatter. Ammo is marginally easier to carry. Terminal ballistics are also said to be better, but that is a very inexact science.

Depends what you want to argue for if its for a war the AKM is perfect as most requirements are clearly in the AK's favor.
Almost all shooting in battle takes place within 300 meters anything beyond that is not necessary so the AK's sacrifice of accuracy for reliability is very sensible here.
Then the choice of munitions 7.62x39mm is a penetrating round that easily goes through brick so cover wont do the enemy much good and its a stopper too that when hit will cause massive trauma.
While NATO rounds are designed to wound (something that is changing because of modern insurgency styled wars where they have to kill people right away instead of wounding say a suicide bomber)

But if you want to do some sharpshooting on a range then reliability wont matter as its all about the accuracy then you should take the M16 rifle family.

Internet warriors, woohoo.

The M4/M16 platform is far superior to the AK family. We're not living in the 70s any more.

If MW2 is anything to go by, I'd rather have a FAMAS or AUG-HBAR anyday.

Hmm, so it seems in the M16/M4's favor, which is quite what I expected. It all depends upon situation and circumstance as well. But has anyone heard of the AK-100 series? The AK-107 uses the old 5.45 Kalashnikov round but is supposedly NOTHING like any previous firearms, including the AK-74. While being much different it is superiour to the AK-74. I haven't heard much of it but I definitely think it's worth looking into for those in favor of the M16/M4 series. I've checked it out and might even get some hands-on experience with it, if you know what I mean :)

I don't really know having never shot either of the guns at all or over a long period of time. My postulation is that the M16 performance-wise is superiour to the AK, but the AK sort of evens itself out when applied to rugged terrain and real battle field experiences. Superiour firepower is nothing when you don't get the chance to service your gun and it jams. Keep going, guys. I'd like to hear more opinions.

The Mini 14 is a good gun.

I also like the AR15, M4 and AK47. And M1 Garand. And a bunch of other different guns.

Ooohhh, touché to both of you! The M14 is WAYYYY too f*cking heavy and long for me though. I only way 130 pounds, man, and that thing is a PIA. But with a long barrel and 30-06 round (right?) who cares? WOOT! xD

OH FUCK, WE CAN SWEAR?! 'Bout time I realize that, they did say fuck a few times in the forum policy thing. AR-15 is nice though. And I love the wood on the AKM :) makes it look amazing.

The AK-47 was apparently very rugged. I head a Vietnam vet talking about one he captured once. I guess he stuck it in his footlocker for a few years, and the bolt rusted shut. He kicked it open, and the weapon still fired perfectly.

HOLY SHIT @ JazzRemington! And doesn't the Mosin Nagant have the old, corrosive Soviet ammunition? Doesn't sound too hot on the internals to be honest D:

SKS? Sweet! With grenade launcher sites? What the fuck?!

I've heard the SKS is reliable anyways, enough to be used for modern hunting activities. A grenade laucnher only adds to the reliability and awesomeness :)

Five or six years ago, you could get Yugoslav 59/66 SKS's for $100. No more. :(

The grenade launcher is meant for firing rifle grenades. Fit on the muzzle compensator and are launched using a special blank cartridge and by adjusting the gas regulator.

I have several AKs and Norinco type 56s within reach, but my favorite of the family has to be the AMD-65.

AR-15s are ok. Mine only jammed when I put dirt in it. But yeah, they are better if only because of all the extra bullshit you can buy for them that doesn't exist for the AK.

Well, according to my skill set in MW2, P90 owns all.

sozialistentony
14th June 2010, 21:24
P90? Perhaps at close range with the 5.7 round ... small barrel and everything, nah! According to my instinct, perhaps the FNHI Mk.17 if you're going to pick a gun from MW2. Not that I play the shit, but it's a great gun. Still jams more than the AK though :p

Take that!, advanced weapon designers.
