They're available at my local Half Price Books on VHS. Should I get them?
1900 is supposed to be a Marxist Epic and Matewan is a film by excellent film director John Sayles. Anyone see them?

Matewan is probably worth a look.

I've seen both and they're excellent, but you should use caution when buying a copy of 1900 because there's a truncated version and the director's cut, 5 hours long. The political dimensions of the story are more pronounced in that version then in the shorter 4 hour version.

I haven't seen 1900 but Matewan is definitely good. It'll teach you the true meaning of the word redneck.

Matewan is very well written by John Sayles (who also directed the movie and plays the hardshell Baptist preacher.) It's also historically accurate and vividly recreates the era and atmosphere of a West Virginia mining town.
