I don't know if anybody else is interested in this or not, but I'm a World War Two amateur historian, collector, and reenactor. I'm especially into learning about and discussing the Heer, SS(From a non-political standpoint, naturally), and pretty much anything to do with the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations.

If anybody else belongs to a reenacting group(doubtful, lol, I know), then give me a shout out! Everybody is welcome to post here, but be respectful to the men who died in this conflict. If this thread has already been made, then by all means lock or merge it.

Also, if there are any other collectors out there, then post your collections. If you have any trouble identifying a piece, or verifying it as original or reproduction, then you are welcome to ask me for advice, however I harbor no responsibility if I happen to be wrong about its authenticity. The best be there is to buy safe, from reputable dealers. And Always Get a Second Opinion!

I'm not sure if reenacting and collecting belong in the history forum, but a general WWII thread probably does.

Anyways, the Second World War was largely a war between imperialist powers; intervention from the Western Allies was intended to preserve British colonial possessions in Africa against the Italians and India & Burma against the Japanese. The American-Japanese antagonisms over colonies in the Pacific had been brewing since the early 20th century and would have likely become a war between the two regardless whether or not Germany had invaded Poland.

Later on when Axis forces had been put on the retreat by the Red Army, it became a scramble for the Allies to secure as much of Europe as possible before the Soviets overtook the whole continent; this is why the Americans, British and Commonwealth forces landed in Normandy 66 years ago yesterday. It is also rumoured that the deployment of the Atomic bomb against Japan was intended to force the Japanese to an unconditional surrender - only to the Americans. This is because the Red Army had steamrolled Japanese forces in Manchuria and Korea, and if the Americans were forced to invade the Home islands, the Soviets would have too; resulting in a communist zone of occupation in Japan.

While certainly, the fears of the Western powers, about Italian and Japanese expansion in areas that threatened colonial interests cannot be denied, but it strikes me as unsatisfactory to suggest that this was the reason for going to war. I rather suspect that their main fear was the threat posed to their actual position in Europe.

Man, if there was a reenactment group in my area..... Canadians tend to only do the battle of the Abraham fields over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and do nothing interesting- er.... WWII.

If there's a Southern Ontario WWII reenactment group that I'm unaware of, please let me know!
