I'm a bit confused about Slavoj Žižek's ideology. I own one of his books: In Defense of Lost Causes, but I haven't read it all the way through yet. I'm a bit confused on his ideology.

I understand he's a Marxo-Leninist, but after reading a summary of In Defense of Lost Causes, he seems more extreme than Stalin, Mao, or the Jacobins, and thinks there should be more violence in revolution. How would revolutionary terror help?

tl;dr I don't know what Slavoj Žižek's ideology is. I know he's a German Idealist, a Marxist, anti-Post Modernist, but he seems more of an extreme Stalinist than I'd like him to be.

But he's still fucking hilarious.

From what I've read/watched of him, he seems to be a pretty awesome dude.
However, on revolutionary theory, he doesn't seem to do much more than troll capitalists or put out much more than things we agree on, sweat, and chest hair.

I'm not sure how exactly to peg him either, but I'm a fan :) I just watched Žižek! today. He keeps his clothes in his kitchen cupboards. Odd guy.

The thing about Zizek is that he takes postmodern irony to its logical conclusion: being even more Stalinist than Stalin. I can't see anything more in it than shock value.

You missed out the crucial label: he's a Lacanian. Lacan influences (I would say infects) everything he writes about. Zizek makes no sense without Lacan - and I don't find Lacan makes much sense either!

So, Zizek is a Lacanian with extra trappings. I wouldn't take his Marxism seriously. He doesn't seem to have a grasp of Marx's theory of value and his politics are, ultimately, just radical social-democratic.

But he's still fucking hilarious.

I must admit to grudgingly liking his Pervert's Guide to Cinema, if only for the clips of some of those amazing movies he talks about.

Ideology is in everything you see and if you're a vegetarian, you'll turn into a monkey!

Žižek would probably argue against an ideology, confessing that an ideology presupposes that the 'other side' has been duped. However, I would place him somewhere in the realm of neo-Marxism.

Best thing he's ever said.
