Arizona School Demands Black & Latino Students’ Faces On Mural Be Changed To White
by Dennis Wagner - Jun. 4, 2010
A group of artists has been asked to lighten the faces of children depicted in a giant public mural at a Prescott school.
The project's leader says he was ordered to lighten the skin tone after complaints about the children's ethnicity. But the school's principal says the request was only to fix shading and had nothing to do with political pressure.
The "Go on Green" mural, which covers two walls outside Miller Valley Elementary School, was designed to advertise a campaign for environmentally friendly transportation. It features portraits of four children, with a Hispanic boy as the dominant figure.
R.E. Wall, director of Prescott's Downtown Mural Project, said he and other artists were subjected to slurs from motorists as they worked on the painting at one of the town's most prominent intersections.
"We consistently, for two months, had people shouting racial slander from their cars," Wall said. "We had children painting with us, and here come these yells of (epithet for Blacks) and (epithet for Hispanics)."
Wall said school Principal Jeff Lane pressed him to make the children's faces appear happier and brighter.
"It is being lightened because of the controversy," Wall said, adding that "they want it to look like the children are coming into light."
Lane said that he received only three complaints about the mural and that his request for a touch-up had nothing to do with political pressure. "We asked them to fix the shading on the children's faces," he said. "We were looking at it from an artistic view. Nothing at all to do with race."
City Councilman Steve Blair spearheaded a public campaign on his talk show at Prescott radio station KYCA-AM (1490) to remove the mural.
In a broadcast last month, according to the Daily Courier in Prescott, Blair mistakenly complained that the most prominent child in the painting is African-American, saying: "To depict the biggest picture on the building as a Black person, I would have to ask the question: Why?"
Blair could not be reached for comment Thursday. In audio archives of his radio show, Blair discusses the mural. He insists the controversy isn't about racism but says the mural is intended to create racial controversy where none existed before.
"Personally, I think it's pathetic," he says. "You have changed the ambience of that building to excite some kind of diversity power struggle that doesn't exist in Prescott, Arizona. And I'm ashamed of that."
Faces in the mural were drawn from photographs of children enrolled at Miller Valley, a K-5 school with 380 students and the highest ethnic mix of any school in Prescott. Wall said thousands of town residents volunteered or donated to the project, the fourth in a series of community murals painted by a group of artists known as the "Mural Mice."
The public art, funded by a $5,000 state grant through the Prescott Alternative Transportation Center, was selected by school students and faculty.
"The parents and children love it," Lane said.

Whether they're doing out of fear from increasing racism, or if it's an act of racism itself, we're definitely seeing the true colors of Arizona here. And it's fucking sickening!

Because there's something controversial about having non-white kids painted on buildings amirite? Not that there wasn't racial controversy in Arizona already, for fuck's sake.

It appears that he's upset that the black kid is bigger than the white kid lol. Boy, you've gotta love racism. Though, you've gotta love even more the excuses behind such blatant racism.

This is the picture of the "mural" they have in the article

I would like a larger picture to get an idea of what they're trying to do though.
But in the end, this is Arizona...

Here's another view of the mural. As you can see, it shows the white kid in the background biking, & then the black kid upfront. What they're wanting are for all children on that mural to be white.

keeping things white in arizona...hell man this same principle spans the entire political spectrum..from the far left to the ultra right..sort of like the mythological snake turning back on itself eating it's own racist tail..
what's happening in arizona is just too transparent and in your face..an easy target.but, racism more insidious and equally as treacherous also exists in the ranks of the both the political right and left..that is keeping things white ..yeah..that's right that includes the left wing movement too..
as a matter of fact some of the biggest racists are people who call themselves communists and marxists..sanctimonious self-righteous hypocrites and phonies..
they are just arizona ...in negative..
why in the hell do you think the left in the USA is such a dud..a no go.. because so many black, brown, yellow and red workers have been so turned off, disgusted and disillusioned with racist white "nobless oblige" liberalism..

There's already a thread about this in discrimination. Here's my post:
From another forum on which I post:
Hahaha, ok ok I can end any kind of debate over this before it even starts. I lived in Prescott Arizona for the last 4 years, I've been going to college there since 2006. I've driven by this thing and let me tell you it looks weird as hell from the street, and honestly the kids face was too dark because of the shade over the upper part of the painting and the kid's very bright eyes. So when you drove past it would kinda look like two bright eyes coming out of a very dark and almost "evil" looking face, it also kind of looked like "blackface," either way it honestly looked weird as hell and just seemed like bad art.
As for the people shouting racial slurs, well I could see that happening among some of those individuals. Prescott, and nearby Prescott Valley and Chino, have some serious red-neckitude among some individuals.
Also, here's some photos (http://www.dcourier.com/main.asp?SectionID=99&SubSectionID=1212).
I highly doubt this is racially motivated.

God damn that is creepy.
Got Steve Blair fired (http://crooksandliars.com/karoli/steve-blair-fired-prescott-radio-station-ra) from the radiostation though, so at least someone was doing something right.
Gecko: Yeah the left isn't free of racism (although it's not "arizona in negative" whatever the hell that means), but dude, stop smoking crack before you post. Might make you far more coherent.

Well if your pissed off at the bull shit going on in Arizona take a number. AZ has been on my shit list for a long time now. Racial profiling, immigrant discrimination, bigoted politicians, appalling prison conditions, this, and the list goes on and on. AZ may be the most racist state in the U.S.

yeah this whitewashed mural in arizona for sure it's revolting, shocking, disgusting, fucked up racism..etc etc..yada yada yada
but it aint nothin new or really unique..actually there is a place where they have been putting out racist shit like this for almost a century..racist moving murals..callled motion pictures and also TV..made in hollywood and NY..cultural feces americans have consumed and digested for a long long time..
grotesque pathological racist stereotypes have been insinuated into the american consciousness for decades..
most white americans are so fucked up with racism they have internalized it as the permanent norm and status quo..they have their heads way up their asses..
for sure this whitewashed mural is outrageous..but so are movies,TV and many other forms of popular culture which bombard us thousands of times daily with their racist message and programming..
nothing new here..ssdd..

What they're wanting are for all children on that mural to be white. This is simply too oddball to take even remotely seriously. What the f is wrong with americans today? - I mean ffs, its just a painting of two kids enjoying themselves in the great outdoors! Why on earth should i be offended or even take any notice what so ever of the skin colour of the two kids?
.....Oh right. Now i get it. Im a political correctness monster who is trying to destroy western civilisation.:mad:
Much of what's happened in AZ for most of its existence can be summed up like this:
BRRRRRRROWN PEOPLE!!!! :cursing::crying:
This incident is one such thing, and should really not be considered out of the ordinary.
1. It had nothing to do with race.
2. They voted against it anyways so this isn't an issue anymore.

1) You're blind (http://www.revleft.com/vb/truth-behind-arizona-t136279/index.html?t=136279).
2) The law was passed (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/24/us/politics/24immig.html).

The Arizona law. It'll be put into effect on January of next year.
This thread is about the mural, not the Arizona law...

The decision on the mural, whether voted yes or no, was in effect due to the rising racism in Arizona. We're seeing latino teachers getting fired, prejudice attacks against latino's (whether documented or not), & now this mural decision. Doesn't help to the fact that even the law, itself, was helped created by a member of one the notorious neo-naza organizations within Arizona.

But the mural looked creepy, not so much the hispanic kid but the depiction of the black kid was definitely weird.
I think that defending bad art and pretending it's racial solidarity is a bit far fetched and trying to make something out of nothing.

They're not changing the way the black kid looks like though. They're changing his skin color to white. Now, unless this is a mural for Michael Jackson or Sammy Sosa, I doubt this has anything else but, 1) due to racist threats, or 2) due to racism, itself.
1. Nowhere was it stated that they were going to make the kid white.
2. They voted it down anyways because it was stupid.
