Besides the excellent 'Che' movies starring Benicio del Torro, what are some other movies (either dramatized accounts or documentaries) on revolutions or post-revolutionary societies? Right now I'm preparing to watch 'Birth of a Republic', a relatively new movie that's a dramatized account of the Chinese Revolution, but surely there must be more.

Here's a film that looks at the Chinese Revolution from a fairly balanced historical viewpoint. It (fairly) objectively looks at the events from 1911 leading up to 1949, and tends to look at Mao and the communists in a fair way, it is pretty dry though:
edit: revleft wont let me post links yet, so search for "China in revolution 1911-1949" and it should come up.
This one looks at Venezuela and is a good and valuable piece of film:
"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" - Search this on youtube, it should come up.

Should this be "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"? I hope the Revolution isn't tired, its still early in global class struggle.

Yes it should be. My mistake. Clearly I am the one who is tired, definitely not the revolution!

Spartacus.
The Russian revolution would make a great idea for a epic film.

Well, there's Sergei Eisenstein's Octobyr (1927) and the Granada Television documentary Ten Days That Shook the World (1967; no relation to John Reed's book) for starters. Also Doctor Zhivago (1965,) Reds (1981,) and The Nine Lives of Nestor Makhno, a 12 part TV series released in 2006.

Well although neither of these are about successful revolutions, both of these films are excellent:
-'novecento' about class struggle in Italy from 1900-1945.
-'Land and Freedom' about the spanish civil war and the international brigades.

Dude, there's a whole host of them in the Viewing List (http://www.revleft.com/vb/viewing-list-t24055/index.html) sticky. It'll take a bit of sifting because it's pretty long, but there are some good recommendations in there.

For sure check out Der Baader Meinhof Komplex, I'm sure you can find subtitles. It's an excellent movie about the RAF in West Germany in the 70s, it's a relatively recent movie, and it's become one of my favorites.

Thanks. It looks like the director also made two other films on China: The Mao Years: 1949-1976 and China: Born Under the Red Flag. Have you watched these? I have a feeling these periods will be presented with more of a pro-market Western bias, which would ruin my day.

I haven't seen them, so I couldn't say. They may have a more pro-western perspective but the one I posted was quite accurate.

For an excellent background article on Dean Reed (the "Red Elvis") see this article by Tony Williams: http://www.november3rdclub.com/2008/03-08/nonfiction/williams.html .
