Alright, so in 2 weeks I'll be ordering a bass. Yamaha RBX 170 to be exact. I'm pretty much asking everyone I know: what color should I get:

Top to bottom is as following: Black, Metallic Dark Blue, Metallic Red, Old Violin Sunburst.
Thoughts?

I've always called the violin one tobacco burst. I would have said red, but nothing's better than baccy burst. Especially when it's like this:

Hmm, terribly sorry, I've just come

Black like mine, and all cool basses.
The bassline is by nature a thing of darkness, that is its beauty

I think you're confusing your senses there, boyo. You never see darkness and never hear a bass line

and never hear a bass line Not if you listen to ska! :thumbup1:
Blue or Black. This is what I would go with since I already have a Tele that's got a burst finish.
Also Yamaha makes some good basses to my surprise.
I think you're confusing your senses there, boyo. You never see darkness and never hear a bass lineIt's called synesthesia; confusing of the senses. Anyway, to the OP, I suppose it depends on what style you play but I've never been a huge fan of Yamahas. My brother plays bass and he has a Hoffner Club (in red) and a Fender Jazz (in white & cream) which brings me on to my second point: get a colour that matches what the other musicians in your band have. It looks pretty cool. My brother's Hoffner matches with our singer's guitar, and my bro's Fender Jazz matches with my drum kit, which is white, and our guitarists strat which is also white. That's my take on it.

I'd probably worry about getting a decent bass more than the colour.

Camo colours, so you can blend into your surroundings.

Black is a camo colour. If you wear black and are in a black room. With the light off.
If not, why not?

Then theres the answer unless he plans on taking it outside or playing it with the lights on.

This but for the poll i would go with sunburst.
I'd probably worry about getting a decent bass more than the colour.Incidentally though we have all have really good instruments. The Hoffner Club is beautiful sounding, quite versatile too. It's really smooth and mellow.

From the reviews I've read, this is a pretty great bass, and has a decent price to boot. I don't think quality should be a problem, Yamaha makes some well made stuff, I own a keyboard made by them.

This is it. I also have a Yamaha keyboard - its very good. However, i've also had a Yamaha guitar - awful.

While that may be true Yamaha has some decent models when it comes to bass guitars. Their basses aren't professional grade stuff, but for their price they really aren't bad at all.

Don't Yamaha make practise guitars for thirteen-year-old boys? I don't know much about bass, but if the brands are equivalent to guitars, Squier are owned by Fender and, though more expensive, Epiphone are owned by Gibson, so I'd look into those a bit more. I knew someone had an Epi T-bird model which he liked alot. Also, do Ibanez make basses?

Got bored and scoured round. Epiphone do a copy of the SG bass. SGs look better as basses. I think they're bloody horrible guitars. I think they must have made it just to highlight their message: "nothing will ever be as beautiful as a Les"

I've come to hate Epiphone guitars. They sound good but the input always fucks up with time. It's so frustrating. I have two Epiphone guitars right now. I'm going to end up getting them fixed and then selling them the first chance I get.

FUCK YOU!,,|, My cherryburst Les is my absolute darling! Ok, fair shout about the electronics, but I know absolutely jack all about electronics, and I've been fine botch-fixing her. The rhythm pickup is buggered, but I never use it any way. If I was after more muted sound, I could just as easily tweak my amp controls.

Maybe...though they make some decent basses.

My advice to the OP would be to save up a couple hundred more bucks then get a BB414 bass instead of the RBX 170. It would be much more worth it than buying the cheapest model Yamaha makes. Though I have no idea how much money your willing to spend....
As far as Epiphone guitars, I'd say they are often equally as good as their Gibson counterpart (except maybe for those Gibsons that cost over three thousand dollars and what not), from my experience at least.
I've got a neck-thru Epiphone Les Paul Custom and it sounds as good if not better than a Gibson. I have no complaints as far as the pickups, switches, inputs or any electronics on it. They've all worked fine. Nothing wrong at all with Epiphone.
Actually, I'm not sure Yamaha's basses and guitars go through to a professional level, unless they're custom-made. I can't think of any well-known bassists that use Yamaha. Although Yamaha drums aren't bad. They're hardware is actually the best that I have, and Dafnis Prieto has a Yamaha kit. I suppose you might've already ordered it, but the worst thing you can do is buy in a instrument that looks lovely in a picture, and then regret buying it. I ordered my present drum kit off of the internet, and whilst I still think it's a lovely instrument, it's not versatile enough, and there's definitely other models that would have fitted my playing style a lot better. Ordering things like this off the internet is not recommended unless you know exactly what you're getting. I would recommend going to your local shop and trying a few basses there. Just my two cents, it's your money and your music so do what you want

^Yamaha certainly does have great drum kits.
I also agree with not buying anything of the internet before you play it first, thankfully I've never done that.

I'm way too old school to buy a guitar from the net. Even if a shop packed to the rafters with Les Pauls and Teles has two l/h guitars, both of which are for thirteen-year-old boys. I've only had one opportunity to play a Les Paul, and one to play a Tele :( But the Tele was so fucking MEATY!!

There is a music shop quite literally behind my house, they should have the bass there. I'll call them and see, or walk over there.

Yamaha makes pretty good instruments for the money. Being a large company, they do have cheap beginner instruments, but of course go up to fairly professional level stuff. Hell, John Myung from Dream Theater and Billy Sheehan play/played Yamaha basses.
Ibanez does make basses. Pretty good ones in fact. The Soundgear series are very good.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, Epiphone guitars sound excellent.. maybe I just have awful luck when it comes to guitar inputs.

Ibanez  Its pretty much my life goal to get an Ibanez guitar (along with becoming a watermelon).
Alas, I have two Yamaha guitars (one mid level, one is all basic like), and a no name. I dislike Gibson.

They make cheap gear. I have a GIO at £100 s/h. Also the lowest level RG costs £180 new. Or it did when I lived in Norwich. But still, pretty fucking lean guitar
I dislike Gibson, but I love punching kittens and listening to Coldplay.
Fixed that for you.

Gibson guitars rock, but their basses are pretty horrendous. Fairly muddy tones, heavy, ugly, overpriced.
