I love tintin! I remember watching it in French class one time, thats when I found out it was a French comic (i think), and realized that Tintin wasn't such a weird name after all.

I grew up reading Tintin so it has a lot of nostalgic value. Too bad that the writer was pretty racist...

Oh, yeah. I've seen pictures from Tintin in the Congo. Aside from the racist illustrations, I hear the book was also an apologist for colonialism. Guess it's no surprise that Hergé was Belgian.
It's too bad, I never read the books personally, but I remember enjoying watching the animated series in French class when I was younger.

I loved reading them, even if they were counter-revolutionary, they were fun stories. There was a forgotten book in the series set in the Soviet Union, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, that was outright anti-communist propaganda, which Hergé disowned post-WWII as the French Communists enjoyed a great patriotic reputation..

Herge actually later denounced the portrayel of blacks in Tintin in the Congo and even went as far to call it the "sin of [his] youth". My granddad gave me the whole set when I was very young and I love them all. Tintin is probably my favourite series of all time. Shame they're about to ruin it with a movie.

French/Belgian series are underestimated, though I personally love Spirou & Fantasio more than Tintin.

Agree with you Dimentio. Asterix and Obelix, Lucky Luke and Tintin are really fun. Too bad about the racism in Tintin.

I totally forgot about Asterix (next thread: Asterix, do you love? :) ), my mommy had so many of their comics (along with Tintin comics). I haven't read Tintin in a long while, and was too little to "notice" the racism back when I did read them. I guess they need to be revisited.

And let's not forget Babar the elephant! I'd be afraid to look up the original series and see how racist it probably is.

I would not call Herge racist but a child of his time and milieu.

Oh man, in elementary school French class all we read was Tintin and Asterix comics:)
If anyone wants to learn French I suggest reading these instead of an actual French novel because the language is simple.

A fair assessment. I concur. In later installments the racism is phased out, showing Herge's (or his collaborators') growth.

Exactly and if he did recant of his use of racism....well I can still enjoy the books..

Herge was hardly a racist; most of the non-white characters were the most honest, intelligent, and sympathetic of characters, and were what made the story fun. (at least, from what I remember in Tintin in Tibet)
Speaking of which, does anyone remember a Chilean or Argentine comic called Condorito?

As a kid Tintin was my big hero, I loved the series and all the characters, cool adventures often with realistic situations like human trafficking, people using drugs ore getting drunked, political conflicts (Syldavia, Borduria) in "Blue Lotus" Herge takes pro-chinesse statment against japanesse imperialism, he made such a clear statment that the belgian minister of defence personally said to him that "this is the whole east asian conflict, noting for children." ore somthing like that.
About the racist-thing, in "The Castafiore Emerald" Herge portrait the gyopsies as the victims of false and prejudict accusations, but in "The shooting star" he doesnt portrait jews in a positive way, might have to do with that this album was created in the same time as Belgium was occupied by the nazis ive never heard Herge opposed ore explained it.
