View Full Version : How old are you?

Robocommie
25th May 2010, 20:59
I've seen a lot of folks of a lot of different ages on the board, so I'm curious, comrades. How old is everyone? I'm 27, myself.

This poll assumes there is nobody younger than 14, because I really don't imagine there is anyone... but life is full of surprises.

1. Large membership? Yeah, the SWP is a real mass party... What is the claimed number again? 6000? My personal guess is that the actual (active and dues paying) membership is around 800 to 1000. You think this is a low count? I refer to my post here (http://www.revleft.com/vb/lindsey-german-resigns-t129095/index.html?p=1675275#post1675275) for the rationale.
2. I'm not an anarchist myself (although it wouldn't be bad if we saw some more anarcho-syndicalism in the workers movement).
3. The SWP sucks at organising the class and is mostly geared towards its own sectarian goals. It is infamous for taking over movements for example or actively frustrating ones that do not submit to their infallible leadership.

I'm just trolling, of course i respect anarchists, specially the ones that know their theory.
And the criticisms that Q made could be made about most groups on the left so that's pretty redundant.
My honest opinion is that the left needs more energy and youth, however if the left is just full of teenagers, the working class can't take us seriously.

The SWP sucks at organising the class and is mostly geared towards its own sectarian goals. It is infamous for taking over movements for example or actively frustrating ones that do not submit to their infallible leadership.

Coming form a tendency that in the UK theatened to 'grass up' Poll Tax rioters and is currently cosying up with reactionary members of the Prison Officers Association this is pretty funny.

You can say that when the SWP stop interfering (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/10140911.stm) with the BA strikes.

13. 12 when I joined. It seems weird for me to be only just a teenager because in all honesty I feel at least a decade older.:blushing:

Christ. When I was that young I didn't know shit about shit. Hats off to you guys.

That said I'm still quite young myself (22).

I'm 66.

This month is 50 years since my first political action: attending a mass meeting up in Harlem, New York City, of the Committee to Defend Martin Luther King Jr. However, I starting calling myself a socialist when I was 14, in '58.

Those were the days, my friends; we thought they'd never end.

Congradulations Dave! I'm encouraged when I hear about people in it for the long haul.

I'm 59 myself. I realized I was a socialist at age 16 when I read some Peace and Freedom Party campaign literature and found myself in agreement with the 10 point program of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense.

I'm also encouraged by all the young leftists here. I hope they stick with it.

And I respect massively the comrades who have been part of the movement for so long.

I like you, because you prove socialism isn't just an "awkward phase."

Do you got any awesome stories about back in the day?

Now 31. Called myself an anarchist at 16 after reading Homage to Catalonia (my teachers made me read Orwell after catching me reading the Communist Manifesto). My first major DA was at 19, against the uranium mine at Jabiluka.

Your teacher made you read Orwell? Becuase you read the Manifesto? Haha. Cappies.

I read the manifesto in school as well. Read it in JROTC, you have no idea how pissed almost everyone in there was.

I don't know the source, but I read somewhere that on the barricades during the Paris Commune, there was "beardless youths" and "old gray-beards" who had been waiting since 1848 to get another crack at the bourgeoisie. :D
