View Full Version : Reactionary Chatter VIII - Absolutely No Hope

Everyone knows what this thread is for. Put all your offtopic crap in here and follow the board rules. This means no spam, racism, excessive flaming, general dickery or pissing in the shallow end.
In light of the exciting events toward the end of the last thread I'll be a bit more vigilant about the atmosphere in this thread. Try very hard to remember you're posting on a public messageboard that aims for a broad audience and not talking to your sleazy mates in whatever sweaty hell-hole of a gentlmen's club you frequent.
Finally, have fun.

Gladly.
It's important to think about WHY they act like sexual objects.
Because if a human being can't get attention, respect, etc they will resort to actions and appearances that do get it.
And what's wrong with that?
These actions might not be healthy. First World culture breeds images of groups of people through popular media and will target demographics by using ideas, images etc that are highly sensational and inappropriate for the reasons they are felt in that particular group, the timing, and what they are replacing.
You need to define healthy and you need to prove how your definition of healthy is both correct and "objective". As far as my life experience goes, there are no such thing as "unhealthy" images, because I am both self-aware and controlling of my emotions. And I have seen some pretty fucked up sh1t (such as 2 girls 1 cup, 1 guy 1 cup, 2 guys 1 horse, etc)
The goal isn't to instill a sense that 'if you see a naked woman you can't enjoy it' of course you're going to be attracted to the sex group of your preference but to take advantage of a product of over sexualized imagery targeted specifically for the purpose of creating a market based on false feelings and the 'Pinocchio's first cigar' scenario it becomes sexist as it can take root in many young people's brains that women SHOULD reveal themselves that it's absolutely necessary to do this in order to exist, in order to attract the opposite sex and in order to be a women. The same way it's targeted at men to instill a sense of 'violence is cool' - 'women should want you' - 'you deserve sex and sexist imagery because you are a man'
It's not taking advantage because people have the choice to believe if what those images are transmiting are "healthy" or "rational" or not.
Why?
Because this is Reactionary Chatter!
This is the thread for offtopic/non-serious posting in Opposing Ideologies. Such posts made anywhere in OI outside this thread will lead to punitive administrative action.
No private gentlemen's clubs as long as I'm stuck here in OI. I don't have anywhere else to post or to read- thus I will comment where ever I can.
And you may comment. And you may criticize. But I don't see why your opinion should take precedence over the majoritarian belief. Nobody is trying to kick you out. The fact is there are more men in reactionary chatter than women, which is why its understandeable that women as a topic is more prevalent. And the fact is that we, men, have been biologically programmed to obssess over women. I would too hope things were differently...

You don't actively have to be attempting to physically stop people posting here in order to be effectively excluding them. Turning reactionary chatter into what is essentially a heterosexual men's space is exclusionary.
The fact is there are more men in reactionary chatter than women, which is why its understandeable that women as a topic is more prevalent.
The fact is that most people posting in reactionary chatter are pasty cracker motherfuckers does that mean we should fill it with borderline racist shit that makes any person of colour reading it distinctly uncomfortable. The fact is that (and I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar on this) there are more breeders in reactionary chatter does that mean you guys can now follow up your male-gaze drooling bullshit with calling any bloke that doesn't appreciate it a limp-wristed whoopsie?
The fact that it is mostly men posting here is a reason to be more careful about what you post, not less. After all there are fewer women calling you out.
And the fact is that we, men, have been biologically programmed to obssess over women.
Oh. My mistake. Apparently every man who doesn't obsess over women (like gay men or asexuals) is lesser or at least deviating from their "biological programming". Must be beacause they're unnatural wrongcocks or something.
Honestly though this is a piss poor excuse for your behaviour. I obsess over sex, men and women all the god damn time (one woman in particular...*sigh*) but I manage to keep my dick from springing out of my trousers when I post in RC. Maybe you should excerise a little self control rather than stomping about and continuing in behaviour that is making our members uncomfortable.
------
I almost didn't post in here because I don't want to be seen as "white knighting" for Mari3L who is, frankly, kicking your ass but I think it's important that you see it's not just her who thinks this behaviour is dickish. Any more of it and I will consider wielding my might admin powers at you.

I find that very easy to believe: sticking just over a metre of steel sword through someone's ribcage is probably considered uncouth by most systems of manners and I don't imagine that the age of chivalry saw too much in the way of soap. That and the class from which knights were drawn are generally twats anyway.

This is the last time I comment on this topic before taking it to the main section.
And what's wrong with that?
The rest of my post below that first sentence explains it.
You need to define healthy and you need to prove how your definition of healthy is both correct and "objective". As far as my life experience goes, there are no such thing as "unhealthy" images,
Consider the idea that sex is projected at youth the same way that fast food, cigarettes and booze is. Domestic violence. A friend of mine works at a job core type center. Dealing with troubled young people and the trend is the women project themselves as pop culture sluts where the men feel as though this is perfectly acceptable. The catch is that when there's sex there isn't- it's rape- and by rape I mean it literally as the men get charged and the women get a trip to the hospital. The females want the attention that the men feel is a go ahead for what they deserve. We've had numerous conversations about this issue and it can be linked directly to what they watch on tv and what they read. When they come from a broken home where the only attention they get is abusive attention it creates an issue where they want to be that- the other issue is who their rolemodels are- the easiest is those on the media pipeline preaching the 'you've had a bad life thus far- this is how to be an adult'.
because I am both self-aware and controlling of my emotions. And I have seen some pretty fucked up sh1t (such as 2 girls 1 cup, 1 guy 1 cup, 2 guys 1 horse, etc)
Perhaps the fact that you were making such posts on a political forum and thought it acceptable means that you are not self-aware and controlling of your emotions.
I'm not saying you're a rapist- or that you're a huge womanizer but I heard an anarchist spit out some cliche garbage after a borderline racist comment 'i'm not racist I have ethnic friends'.
It's not taking advantage because people have the choice to believe if what those images are transmiting are "healthy" or "rational" or not.
This is ridiculous. If the audience had a grip on reality from the get go maybe. Those targeted are young people, they grow up with this stuff being pounded into their heads so they think it's real. It creates a false reality. The people that do come to understand what's wrong with it may still act that way because they want the attention and have not learned of another way , a healthy and non harming, way to get it.
And you may comment. And you may criticize. But I don't see why your opinion should take precedence over the majoritarian belief.
The majority can often times be completely wrong.

You don't actively have to be attempting to physically stop people posting here in order to be effectively excluding them. Turning reactionary chatter into what is essentially a heterosexual men's space is exclusionary.
How is it exclusionary? I am not initiating aggression against her, nor am I preventing her from any action. You need to pervert the definition of exclusion a lot in order to consider that I should be demanded to pay equal attention to all things happening on this thread.
I honestly don't understand what that last sentence meant. In dictionary english please (its not my first language so...)
The fact that it is mostly men posting here is a reason to be more careful about what you post, not less. After all there are fewer women calling you out.
I am not careless about what I post
Oh. My mistake. Apparently every man who doesn't obsess over women (like gay men or asexuals) is lesser or at least deviating from their "biological programming". Must be beacause they're unnatural wrongcocks or something.
Ha...phail
Its perfectly natural for men to be attracted to other men and or other things, what I don't understand is why the hell me and others talking about women is somehow "aggressing" against them or against gay/asexual people. They are perfectly ABLE to discuss men here too. Why don't they? There is plenty of space until we reach another 500th post.
I always keep my dick from springing out of my trousers when I post in RC. Every single fucking comment i made about girls was not "sexual" in the least. The "sexiest" thing i've said so far is "cute" and "<3". Oh right...i forgot, i'm the douchebag just because I want to share my "facial-symmetry beliefs"/"shoulder-to-waste-ratio" with other people...
If i'm making other members unforcomtable (and i'm NOT breaking forum rules) either they ignore my posts or they change the forum rules. Simple.
Any more of it and I will consider wielding my might admin powers at you.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is oppression at its best (even though its only a forum, you guys and gals need to maintain "thought purity", am i right? ...)

Everyone picks their own rolemodel. People still hold incredible amounts of choice, especially with the internet out there. There is no excuse to remain ignorant.
Do you think that I value men/women as artificial as you are describing? I do not, and most people don't. Thankfully they are not the majority but I too worry about their influence. Everytime the topic is brought up I do my share of reasoning with other people in order to "enlighten" them. Of course I always keep a foot behind in case i'm commiting some logical error, but most of the times people agree with my take. And the funny thing is, they agree with me and still value those other fake plastic people!
Why is that? Its easy to blame corporations and the state because they hold the greater share of the power, but individuals still have a choice. And their ability to recognize that choice is, if we were to start blaming, more connected with forceful/mandatory public/private shcooling than anything else. But I don't like to blame others too often. People have to accept responsability.
And if in the end they choose to worship such fake plastic role models whatever the utopian socio-economic system in place, then that should tell you something about the nature of subjective human value.
Perhaps the fact that you were making such posts on a political forum and thought it acceptable means that you are not self-aware and controlling of your emotions.
I was making "such" posts in the only non-political part of the political forum...
They can choose not to watch the commercials on television
They can choose to ignore billboard ads
Since most people on the western world have access to internet, there is no excuse to continue having those backward beliefs.
The majority can often times be completely wrong.

Nice little diddy by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) called 'I am a Patriot', which he sang at a Ralph Nader rally in 2000.
It should register with all, as it's lyrics are neutral:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MEqtYVt7xI
And the rivers shall open for the righteous...
And the rivers shall open for the righteous...
And the rivers shall open for the righteous someday...
I was walking with my brother,
And he wondered, oh how I am.
Said what I believe in my soul
Ain't what I see with my eyes,
And there's no turning back this time.
I am a patriot, and I love my country,
Because my country is all I know.
Wanna be with my family,
People who understand me.
I got no place else to go.
I am a patriot
I was walking with my boyfriend.
He looked so fine, I said
"Baby, what's on your mind?"
I want to run like the lions
Released from their cages...
Released from the rages
Burning in my soul tonight.
I am a patriot
And I ain't no communist,
And I ain't no socialist,
And I ain't no capitalist,
And I ain't no imperialist,
And I ain't no democrat,
Sure as fuck ain't no republican either,
I only know one party,
And that is freedom.
I am...I am...I am...
I am a patriot, and I love my country,
Because my country is all I know.
And the rivers shall open for the righteous,
And the rivers shall open for the righteous,
And the rivers shall open for the righteous someday...
Someday...someday... someday...

Alrighty then. But um, where the hell did that come from?
I was talking to a primitivist and asked how could a population of 6 billion survive through hunting and gathering. They said I was insinuating that billions would have to die to have a primitivist society and then proceded to give me an argument that amounted to "Industrial society kills people already so why are you so hard on primitivism for it!".
And are there as many dumb primitivists as there are dumb Miseans?
More, because there are more miseans than primitivists, I think.
Robert
28th May 2010, 00:54
The primitivists are very hard to count because they're back in them woods and up in them trees.
I don't mean to get heavy in the chatter thread, but I think one of you communists' problems is that you are so utterly contemptuous of every philosophy except your own. Catholics, preachers, Buddhists, mystics, reformists, monarchists, Miseans, Capitalists, Primitivists, they're all "stupid" and worthy of contempt, right? Some of them should have been aborted by their mothers and all that.
I never knew primitivism even existed until you told me how "fucking stupid" they are. So I looked at an essay over on one of their websites. Here's an excerpt:
Primitivism is the pursuit of ways of life running counter to the development of technology, its alienating antecedents, and the ensemble of changes wrought by both.
Technology is here defined as tool use based upon division of labor...that is, tool manufacture and utilization that has become sufficiently complex to require specialization, implying both a separation and eventual stratification among individuals in the community, along with the rise of toil in the form of specialized, repetitive tasks ....
The factors showing the necessity of primitivism are many, and may include
an awareness that some societies in history and pre-history compare favorably with our own in many respects. The best known example of this may be the relative leisure of nomadic hunter-gatherer societies in comparison with the omnipresence of work in modern industrial society.
a realization of the environmental destruction that appears as a necessary concomitant of technological progress.
a concern over the predictions of technological progress made by Kurzweil, Moravec, et al, 2 (http://www.primitivism.com/what-is-primitivism.htm#technology) describing the fast emergence of genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and in particular artificial intelligence systems that could subject biological humans to economic and environmental pressures with which our species may be unable to cope.....
Primitivism today is an inchoate tendency, particularly considering the enormity of its goal. Within the context of an open society, the success of primitivism would require the apparent superiority of a primitivist approach to a technological one in almost every area that is ultimately germane to human well-being. Anything short of this accomplishment may involve a synthesis of primitivist and technological approaches in our society, but not the ousting of the latter by the former.
....
Does the trajectory of primitivism by itself reveal the most advantageous mode of existence for human beings? That is a question that nobody can answer. Whether our path should be primitivism, technology, or some synthesis between the two, it is time to think clearly about the days ahead. What is important is the development of a range of options for bettering the human condition, and it is in the expansion of those options that we can find our path to the best possible way of life.

Am I ready to throw out my 10 year old :( TV and move to the woods based on such sentiments? No, but the writer makes eminently reasonable points there and expresses them with tolerance and sensitivity. I find those qualities lacking in much of what I read on Revleft.
Now pass the meade and tell me again how you slayed that saber toothed tiger back in the olde days.

The primitivists are very hard to count because they're back in them woods and up in them trees.
I don't mean to get heavy in the chatter thread, but I think one of you communists' problems is that you are so utterly contemptuous of every philosophy except your own.
Yeah I think that's a pretty fair assessment, but I think that's just more this forum than the left in general. I personally don't care that much at all about reformists or religious people. Libertarians and really really enthusiastic religious people, though...
Catholics, preachers, Buddhists, mystics, reformists, monarchists, Miseans, Capitalists, Primitivists, they're all "stupid" and worthy of contempt, right? Some of them should have been aborted by their mothers and all that
This is a fair assessment too.
I never knew primitivism even existed until you told me how "fucking stupid" they are. So I looked at an essay over on one of their websites. Here's an excerpt:
This is all very different from what the primitivists I know (and the primitivists all of revleft hates) say!
These primitivists (anarcho-primitivists!) seem to want a total return to nature and actually complain about technology being authoritarian.
Probably doesn't refer to all primitivists, and just the ones I'm most familiar with.

but someone has to do menial jobs. Whom would you suggest (besides me, I mean:blink:)?
People who are actually hired to do those jobs and are therefore able to enjoy the same protection in the workplace enjoyed by other workers, are entitled to a minimum wage and can take other benefits (paid holiday, bonuses and so on). The people who currently do it, in fact. The only thing that will happen when people on the dole are forced to, for example, pick litter off the streets is that the people who already do the job (in this case streetcleaners hired by the council) will be out of work as well.
Unwaged, non-voluntary work is also known as something else, by the way, but I just can't put my finger on it...

Now the problem that I've been mentioning that I have with the ideal of "Class Warfare" is that (at least here in America) everyone looks the same--you can't tell a Proletarian from a Bourgeois by the way he looks or dresses. Everyone looks "Middle Class." So..............
I propose all Cappies start to wear a bit of a "uniform." The ascot.
http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_430xN.25026656.jpg
This way in the class war we Capitalists could know who is on our side and who we should be fighting.
It's a traditional upper class garment, so I'm not doing anything new. It has a bit of style and flair. We Cappies should know each other in a crowd. And it should be the standard dress of all OIers. It's just the kind of thing a Commie would never wear.

Cartoon network has a late-night block called [Adult Swim] where they play Family Guy and all that. On Saturdays they play all the Japanese stuff, which is usually terrible except for Cowboy Bebop and FLCL. Bebop's on at some insane hour like 3:00 AM now, and FLCL is on at 5.

Today I walked along a semi dry riverbed about 60 miles from my house. This riverbed is known to fossil hunters as being prolific in production of fossilized remains of animals that swam in the ocean that covered Texas millions of years ago.
You could make out hundreds of big clamshell impressions in the riverbed, and after about an hour of further scrutinizing the bed, I chanced upon several paleolithic remains of bone. And after another hour, I found a fossilized vertebra that looked like the one here, second from the top on the left:
http://northtexasfossils.com/reptilia.htm
I'm not sure how they know, but the fossil hounds who hunt here are confident that these vertebrae of this size come from an animal called a mosasaur, which looked like this:
http://www.makli.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Mosasaur.jpg
and lived in the late cretaceous epoch, over 50 million years ago. Interesting day. I won't do it again though. Water moccasins EVERYWHERE! Well, too many for comfort anyway.

and lived in the late cretaceous epoch, over 50 million years agoIt goes further than that - the Cretaceous ended 65 million years ago. Late cretaceous would be about 80-65 million years ago.
Water moccasins EVERYWHERE! Well, too many for comfort anyway.Strangely enough, Mosasaurs are believed to be closely related to modern snakes and some speculate that in fact snakes lost their legs in the ocean and returned to land.

Marx, do you happen to know how one can safely assume, as fossil collecors around here do, that a given fossilized vertebra from over 50 million years ago came from "a mosasaur"?
It seems like an awfully specific claim based on one bone, unless the word "mosasaur" encompasses far more kinds of reptiles than I thought.

do you happen to know how one can safely assume, as fossil collecors around here do, that a given fossilized vertebra from over 50 million years ago came from "a mosasaur"?
I suspect (although I do not know the specifics) they infer this based on three factors - the size, the shape of the articular part (one end of the "socket"), and the stratigraphic layer in which it was found. The first and third are usually sufficient, because if you find a large vertebrae in a marine layer from the late cretaceous in Texas, the only other candidates might be plesiosaurs or elasmosaurs - which, due to their extended necks, have very distinct vertebral formations. So the conclusion that the bone came from a mosasaur is, I suspect, quite reasonably arrived at.
It seems like an awfully specific claim based on one bone, unless the word "mosasaur" encompasses far more kinds of reptiles than I thought.
Likely it does. Mosasaurs are short hand for Mosasauridae - a family. For example, dogs are a family (Canidae, with wolves foxes and whatnot), cats and lions are a family (Felidae) - thus they encompass a wide array of organisms.
Anyway you should post a picture here. It's pretty impressive to find the fossil of such a large animal on a casual dig - I know several people who went on several fossil hunting trips and have come up with little more than the occasional coke bottle to show for it.

Something interesting: The Babe Theory of Social Protest.
The Babe Theory, first described by P.J. O'Rourke in his Parliament of Whores book:
"Best of all, there were hardly any beautiful women at the [Housing Now!] rally. I saw a journalist friend of mine in the Mall, and he and I purused this line of inquiry as assiduously as our happy private lives allow. Practically every female at the march was a bowser. "We're not being sexist here," my friend insisted. "It's not that looks matter per se. It's just that beautiful women are always on the cutting edge of social trends. Remember how many beautiful women were in the anti-war movement twenty years ago? In the yoga classes fifteen years ago? At the discos ten years ago? On Wall Street five years ago? Where the beautiful women are is where the country is headed," said my friend. "And this," he looked around him, "isn't it."
Look for the babes, and that's where the social action is, that's where the success will be.
...the concept of "hot left-wing chicks" has gone from a nostalgic abstraction to a flat-out laughable oxymoron.
At left-wing protests in America today, it is more common to see this:

Mari3L is right, but it probably depends on where/what organization and cause. Even than, it would be wrong to assume that you won't find attractive people at all in the far-left or involved in social causes.
I was at the last SFA Encuentro and there were a few pretty girls who looked normal (like at least 1/3 or half), besides the more edgy New-Age looking girls that most people stereotypically associate with activism these days (particularly environmentalist activism) who made up like 1/4-1/5. However, to be honest, I was under the impression that a lot of private university students where there versus those who went to public university.
I wouldn't know how it measures up in a M-L or anarchist organization. Although to be honest, pretty M-List girls exist (even, surprisingly, in the anti-revisionist camp).
The only other anarchist I have met IRL has life-stylist tendencies (i.e. veganism) and while she may have somewhat of a grunge look she's not ugly either.
So how many of you revlefters smoke cigarettes? I usually smoke American Spirits, but I prefer to smoke Dunhills. I also have smoked Nat Sherman Naturals and they're pretty good but way too pricey.
When it comes to cheap cigarettes, I'll probably go for Marlboro.
Currently, I have not been smoking regularly. Perhaps I'm quitting. Who knows.
licourice papersthat sounds nice...I like licorice
The last time I had a rollie was in Brooklyn...I don't remember what kind of tobacco it was but it had a particular taste and ain't so bad. It came in a white pouch. I was too drunk to know what brand it was.

I smoke cigars on occasion. I can't get Cubans anymore (DAMN that George Bush!) And further I kind of made a little mark with cigar ash on the ceiling of my wife's car which got me into a LOT OF TROUBLE. (Besides I'm not allowed to smoke in the house.) So I'm not doing much smoking these days. :(

I got some Cubans in Mexico once and the shopkeeper put Mexican bands on them for me so as to fool U.S. Customs. I was walking toward the customs desk on my return and ended up throwing them in the trash, because I knew that if one of the agents had asked me "are you trying to smuggle in Cubans with Mexican bands," I would have admitted it, and I didn't want to pay a fine.
I found out later what those U.S. Customs agents do with confiscated Cuban cigars. They burn them. But not in an incinerator.

Q'back, I saw your thread on Deja Vu but can't contribute over there, but I thought you might be intrigued by my theory.
I think what happens is that when someone says something that sounds eerily familiar, or you see something that seems familiar, the memory circuits in your brain are just oscillating involuntarily, like when any other part of your body starts involuntarily twitching. You're seeing something and thinking about it and simultaneously experiencing memory of it, but all you are remembering is the thought that you had just a millisecond before. It produces an effect like holding a microphone near an amplifier and creating feedback howl.
So when you're saying "I've experienced this before", you have just sensed it before, like a millisecond before when you first saw or heard it. Then it gets more and more intense as the oscillation increases. You keep "remembering" it simultaneous with sensing it.
I've reached a point where I force myself to consider this possibility right as I am experiencing deja vu, and it immediately calms the sensation, just like pulling the microphone away from the amp to stop feedback howl. Too bad, in a way. What do you think?

I imagine. But this is a very "I walk alone" kind of guitar. I don't think it's of any value in a band or group setting--but what it does is adds kind of a big backdrop to voice.

I kind of do. I'm not too great--my main instrument is the guitar. But my daughter plays well (she also gives lessons strating this summer!)
Anyway to answer your question--if you want to learn to play Chopin and the Liszt and other difficult classicalists you definitely need lessons, they will shorten your learning curve by a good deal.
But if you want to learn for your own amusement and learn to play popular songe, etc. you can learn on your own. The most important thing is to PRACTICE. You are plenty of self teaching books out there I'm sure plenty of videos. Also there's this guy on PBS Scott Huston that does a pretty good job of teaching piano without going through a lot of fussing over theory.
Good luck--and practice.

Strong first half for Mexico, dominated all over the place for most of it, aside the last few minutes where there was some excitiment with the South Africans at their goal mouth. Despite that it's still nil nil because the only shot Mexico got in was offside, partly due to them wasting some chances (Franco drawing a cock all over his headers) and partly because the South African keeper is a legend. Exciting opening game for the neutral spectator and I can't wait for the second half.

Second half was even better all around. South Africa got out of whatever slump they were in at the first half to go ahead early (oh and how) and kept the pressure up for quite a bit of that half. Then, of course, Mexico equalised, getting the ball over Khune and pretty much sealing the game as a 1 all draw despite some brilliant chances created by both sides - South Africa especially created a couple of blinding chances that were shut down by an equally skilled defense.

A nailbiting match. England shot ahead with Gerrard's goal but even though we kept the pressure up on the yanks we didn't manage to create a greater goal difference which we suffered for when Dempsey made his shot. That was a goal that needn't have happened, really, but it did and all we can do now is try to hammer some shots home. I the yanks haven't really felt the full effect of Rooney and Hesky yet (well, thir keeper probably felt a lot more of Hesky than he wanted to when that mountain flew into him...)
I'm still confident that we'll get at least a 2-1 if not 3-1 victory.

I won't lie, I'm sweating.
The English look like surgeons, we like lumberjacks.
I was sure they'd lay back and just play defense after scoring first. It appeared to be working.
I actually don't follow "Football" so I don't have a horse in the race, but from what I understand Ghana has a pretty good team. It would be nice if a team from Africa could win the Cup this time.
"Football"?Why the ""? You are one of those people calling a sport, that has a bunch of huge, steroid guys who spend their days at the gyms, but still wear those ridiculous huge shirts to look even bigger, and carry an egg from one side of a field to another with their hands, football?Where the hell is the foot in this?Dont tell me is the extra point every now and then..
There in America, you really need to check how you name sports, others may not be bad, but this totally is.

Yeah, I get tired of hearing about the North Koreans (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127849878&ft=1&f=1004) beating Italy in '66, too.

That's interesting, but I was referring to when England beat West Germany. I have no idea why we Brits tend to focus obsessively on past glories.

Every country does it, hell every place with a sports team does it. It's only noticeable because England haven't won anything worthwhile for fucking ages. It's the same with people who support, say, Charlton Athletic or Sheffield United (hell, even Sheffield Wednesday): people would rather think of the times they won something than concentrate on the fact that they're total losers. For example I imagine certain fans of the Toon are going to be going on about winning the championship this year when they're relagated right back there next season

But don't feel bad, here in the USA we heard endless refrains of "1950 again (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_v_United_States_%281950%29)!" in anticipation of last week's match.

Wow, did you see the Portuguese team singing the hell out of their himno nacional? Gave me chills, no lie.
If they play like they sing, they'll cut Côte d'Ivoire to ribbons.
But the bookies are split on this one. http://www.betonworldcup2010.com/news/portugal-vs-ivory-coast-odds-and-preview/2481

Fun fact: the british government can hand off people who have been unemployed for a certain length of time to employers who aren't obliged to pay them.

What do you mean?
Basically, after 6 months of unemployment you are obliged to go and work for a company for 25 hours a week, during which they will not pay you although the government continues to pay roughly half of what you would earn in the same hours on minimum wage. During this time you don't count as being unemployed for the purposes of statistics but neither do you count as employed for the purposes of your rights & responsibilities.

What's the purpose of it?
Doesn't the US have a similar system but only if you're meeting with a 'career councilor' and in a work force program?

The stated aim is to help people get into work however if one wanted to be cynical (and I can't imagine why anyone would be) it's to provide certain businesses with a supply of cheap and expendable labour.

A lot of companies here in the US have stopped hiring full time and are doing this 'part-time' hire minimum wage bullshit and are extremely liberal with their 'get rid of you now' policy if they want to shit on your employment.
I hope the fun fact you posted doesn't currently apply to you or anyone you know and if it does stay fierce.

You can be unemployed for about 79 weeks in the U.S., with extensions. After that you just don't get unemployment benefits and you're on your own. Don't count as unemployed anymore either.

At every job I've ever had, everyone I know got about an hour short of full-time employment on the schedule.
I remember once I looked at a schedule, added up my hours, and they shorted me by half an hour after I asked for more hours.

I know I'm a Cappie and all of that--but that f-ing sucks. It perverts the work force, it perverts government and it in the end perverts business.
And it hurts decent people looking for employment.
