Out of any rebel group that I feel has more potential in liberating their people away from the exploitation & harm done to them through the use of oil & the companies in which keep them operating, I would say MEND (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) has that potential as they wage war against the large oil companies that is destroying the Niger Delta, & all those who preside upon it within Nigeria. There was a truce between them & the government in 2009, but the government failed to keep any agreement between the two, & so, since Jan. 30, MEND has broken the unilateral truce & is waging revolutionary war against the Nigerian government & the large oil companies again.

Here's a documentary which exposes the situations going on in Nigeria & on the Niger Delta & those who are resisting against such a threat:

I agree 100%. I really don't understand people who are in favour of letting Shell get away with this, if they even exist. Surely the average person would be appalled at the things Shell gets away with...

Would be great to see a movement like this getting started in Ecuador, where Texaco's oil spills have caused cancer and environmental destruction far beyond repair.

A good read about the MEND can be found in "Falling off the edge" by Alex Perry; it's not really a socialist read, but it's a good piece of journalism which attempts to describe various resistance movements against capitalism's globalisation.

Are you aware of any communication between MEND and any other socialist or leftist organisations?

I don't think MEND are socialist, though I don't think they're really aware of any class split, but rather a split between those who have it all & those who have nothing, & they're fighting for those who have nothing. So I'm sure, if they were educated on the class differences, they'd fight for socialism.

This isn't about ideology, this is just fighting for your humanity!

Here's a video that exposes a certain element of corruption that is present today in the Niger Delta & shows reason why MEND are risking their lives for such a cause:

Yes, Nigeria is in desperate need of the First White Marxists approaching the astonished aborigines (http://readingthemaps.blogspot.com/2010/05/first-white-marxists-reach-tuhoe_11.html).
