There were quite a few pre-modern revolutionary movements, almost all of them had a religious ideology and a focus on the peasantry.

Thanks. Any good resources apart from wikipedia on the slave revolts of Spartacus?
All that is known comes from Livy, Sallust, Appian and Plutarch. Since the rebels did not leave their own account, you must read between the lines of privileged historians, patronized by the ruling classes, to learn about the struggles of oppressed people in that era.

The best book on Spartacus is:

Urbainczyk, T. (2004), Spartacus (Bristol Classic Press).

Another premodern rebellion was that of the Zanj, some East African slaves in 9th Century Mesopotamia. See: hxxp://libcom.org/library/zanj-slaves-rebellion-ad-869-883

For those interested in the history of revolts and rebellions by slaves, peasants and other classes, this thread is meant to be a collection of all such eventsIf you're just going to list then you'd be better off using this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_revolutions_and_rebellions)

There were peasant revolts in England and France during the Hundred Years war, but they didn't accomplish much aside from seizing manors and destroying property. They were quickly put down.
