Comrade Ahmad Sa'adat, General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, called for the release of all political prisoners in Palestinian jails, emphasizing the importance of the rights of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
In a meeting held at Ramon Prison on May 16, 2010 with the leader of the National Democratic Assembly in Palestine '48, Dr. Jamal Zahalka, Comrade Sa'adat expressed his complete opposition to the resumption of negotiations with the occupation, saying that any so-called "safeguards" provided by the U.S. are maneuvers and tactics meant to absorb international pressure and do not reflect any change in the Israeli position, noting that "Avigdor Lieberman is the clearest reflection of the reality of the Israeli position."
Dr. Zahalka said that Comrade Sa'adat discussed the Palestinian situation, saying that any political initiative that is labeled a "security first" initiative is unacceptable and will never succeed. He called for a climate of national reconciliation, and a putting aside of all obstacles to reconciliation, emphasizing the need to restructure and democratize the Palestine Liberation Organization in order to manifest political unity among Palestinians.
Furthermore, he said, Comrade Sa'adat expressed his support for the Palestinian position in the negotiations for prisoner exchange, saying that it is an issue of national standards and that he was convinced that the Palestinian negotiators would not back down from their correct national demands.
Dr. Zahalka said that he asked Comrade Sa'adat about his health, and that he is "not only in perfect health, but with very high morale. He expressed his appreciation for the National Democratic Alliance's firm upholding of the Palestinian people in '48, and asked Zahalka to convey his greetings to the leaders of the national and Islamic movements throughout Palestine. Zahalka said he asked Comrade Sa'adat, "How is your health, Abu Ghassan?" He replied, "I am now 58 years old, and I'm not sick, I don't have diabetes and my heart is healthy, I walk daily for an hour during the so-called recreation period allowed by the prison authorities. My health is excellent."
Comrade Sa'adat expressed his steadfast morale despite the difficult and strenuous conditions of isolation and solitary confinement imposed by the prison administration. Dr. Zahalka traveled to Ramon prison to meet with Comrade Sa'adat and another prisoner in solitary confinement, Hassan Salameh, sentenced to 48 life sentences, who has been suffering in isolation for over 12 years.
Dr. Zahalka discussed the details and circumstances of isolation and solitary confinement, utilized against prisoners as a form of revenge. Salameh said to Zahalka that prisoners in solitary confinement are not allowed access to the Arab press and only a few books in their isolation cells. Furthermore, they are prevented from visits and from communicating with other prisoners. Zahalka pledged to monitor the issue of isolation and solitary confinement and demand that prisoners' rights under international law be guaranteed and protected.
The Zahalka said he would monitor the issue of solitary confinement and breach of the Zionist prison authorities to the minimum rights a prisoner as defined by the relevant international instruments.
In addition, Comrade Majdi Rimawi, the imprisoned leader of the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades responsible for the assassination of extremist Zionist tourism minister Rehavam Ze'evi in retaliation for the Israeli assassination of PFLP General Secretary Abu Ali Mustafa in 2001, sent a letter from prison affirming his pride at being a member and a fighter of the PFLP, emphasizing the unity of the Palestinian prisoners.
Comrade Rimawi said in his letter that all of the detainees keep good and strong relationships regardless of political affiliation; "what brings us together," he said, "is a single banner, a higher goal and the highest and largest of the factions - which is Palestine." He said that he has learned in the "school of the Front, of al-Hakim and Abu Ali, of Wadie Haddad and Ahmad Sa'adat, that I am proud to belong first to the Palestinian people and
their steadfastness and resistance and national constants, in order to achieve Palestinian national rights."
Rimawi praised the unity of the prisoners' movement inside the Israeli jails, saying the prisoners have strong morale and legendary steadfastness despite the Prison Service's practices against them, stressing that the prisoners' movement was united in confronting the occupation abuses and attacks against them and the deprivation of their basic rights.
Comrade Rimawi said that the prisoners in the Zionist jails, in isolation cells and interrogation rooms are viewing the situation closely and have deep sadness for the internal Palestinian situation due to the ongoing division. He called for the masses of our people to draw lessons from the unity of the prisoners' movement in order to act to end the divison and move forward with an open heart and a sincere dedication to national unity, to unite to confront the greatest enemy, the Israeli occupation.
Comrade Rimawi ended his letter with greetings of pride and resistance to the General Secretary of the PFLP, Comrade Sa'adat, and his fellow leaders, Ahed Abu Ghoulmeh, Basil al-Asmar and Hamdi Qur'an and all prisoners of freedom, saying that "one day, we will break the chains and shatter the cells of isolation, racism and fascism, and we will come to our land, to cultivate the fruit of freedom."
