Now West Bengal: Maoists kill CRPF Dy Commandant, 4 men
Thu May 20 2010
Six weeks after the carnage in Dantewada, Maoists targeted the Central Reserve Police Force again, blowing up a CRPF vehicle in Bengal’s West Midnapore district. A Deputy Commandant was among five personnel killed in the attack at a culvert near Pingboni village around 11.30 am today.
Deputy Commandant Vijaypal Singh of the CRPF’s 66 Battalion was returning to the Force’s Ramgarh camp after visiting the Kadashol camp, accompanied by five constables. Singh fought grievous injuries for several hours before succumbing around 7 pm in Kolkata, where he had been airlifted.
Four constables including the driver of the vehicle died immediately after the attack; the fifth, brought to Kolkata along with Singh, has been admitted to hospital.
Today was the second day of a bandh called by Maoists in five states. Vijaypal Singh and his men were travelling in a CRPF vehicle, in violation of instructions issued in the wake of the April 6 Dantewada massacre. That attack — in which 75 CRPF personnel died — was itself brought on by gross violations of standard operating procedures.
