Hello friends,

My name is Sam. I'm male, 20, live in Lancaster, PA, and attend a university in Dallas, TX where I am currently studying psychology and philosophy.

Fall of my freshman year of college I read the Communist Manifesto. Needless to say, for the past year (about) I've been exploring Marxism and have come to espouse the general concept, though I am still learning.

I am an idealist. Being an idealist often times makes one a pessimist. I am a pessimist. Marxism caught my attention because it rejects (generally) the materialist, lazy, irresponsible, and greedy mindset of our country, the United States (can you hear my pessimism?). While my exposure and knowledge is limited, I am continually trying to learn more about Marx, Engels, and communism. I already posted a series of questions in the "Learning..." section of the forum if anyone would like to help me out. :)

To sum up "who I am" in as few words as possible:
I am a Roman Catholic--Existentialist-Legal Value Subjectivist-Psychologically Non-Dualistic-Marxist.
HAS YOUR MIND EXPLODED YET?!?! :)

I look forward to participating further on this forum!

Cheers,
Sam

Welcome! Your hyphenated identity is interesting indeed. Not sure how heavy you are into Catholicism, but just a friendly reminder that preaching is prohibited here.

Hey, welcome. I'm from a catholic background but I'm an atheist as I appreciate marxism as a materialist conception of existence. I think you may be confused on this site as we use 'idealist' and 'materialist' in a different fashion, for us an idealist philosophy is one which has its focus on the mind and a materialist one views the mind as a product of material existence as Marx said, "consciousnes is a product of conditions". I believe that marxists should not be sectarian in how we approach religious workers or youth but rather understanding. Most of the ultra-left dregs on this site would hold an antagonistc view towards religious people. The example of liberation theology in Latin America clearly demonstrates that religion does not preclude revolution.

Here are some marxist resources on christianity, including a debate between a marxist and a methodist and also an article on latin american liberation theology:
