Move to chitchat please.
Also Trotsky, although it might not have made a big difference in the long term.

Trotsky for sure. But I have no doubt he would have met the same fate as Stalin.

Well, I cant believe that somebody voted for Stalin, we saw what happened! Didnt History teach us anything???
Trotzky should have been the follower of lenin btw.
Yes, please move to Chit-Chat.
Trotsky, but many speculate he would have been just as oppressive. Maybe it was not the individual themselves that led to the purges, repression etc., but the material conditions that engendered it. Anyway, it seems like quite an irrelevant debate now that it's been and happened, and one that will almost definitely lead to overt sectarianism. To finish with, Lenin's Last Testament (http://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1922/dec/testamnt/index.htm) might shed some light on the situation. There's also Trotsky's speculation on the subject in On the Suppressed Testament of Lenin (http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/1932/12/lenin.htm). But anyway, this whole debate makes us like religious fanatics part of some crazy cult. It's like Marx is God, and Lenin is the messiah, and now we need someone to the place of his holiness...

Trotsky said that if he had wanted to pander to the conservative bureaucracy which was gaining power, and "turn in his application to be the gravedigger of the revolution," he could have easily played Stalin's role, but preferred to rally the weakened international working class against the tide of reaction, to preserve a spotless revolutionary banner for future generations.

Haha, the thread title is like, the ultimate way to troll revleft.
to preserve a spotless revolutionary banner for future generations. PURITY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's what it's all about for most self-righteous trots, preserving their own 'ideological purity' because they can't stand facing the reality of what has/had to be done as it upsets their liberal sensibilities. Just watch them run from and condemn every revolutionary movement, to preserve their 'spotlessness'. All they do is criticise and come up with useless theories from the sideliness; all they do is 'preserve a spotless revolutionary banner for future generations', never actually joining the current generations in their revolution because it will soil their spotless banner. For this reason, trotskyist communism will remain an ideal forever.
I voted Zinoviev.. he seems like the coolest person out of all the options,. Ultimately that's what this kind of senseless debate boils down to.

the reality of what has/had to be doneTo what, murder the working class vanguard, end the international socialist revolution, and roll back the gains of October, for the benefit of bureaucratic traitors? No, that shouldn't have been done.

we say trotsky, but in truth we dont know how things wouldve panned out.
How was trotsky as a military strategist? Maybe the nazis wouldve won the war for the eastern front had he been in charge.
For all Stalins shortcomings, i'm not sure i'd like to jump in the back of a flux-capacitor charged delorean to find out what wouldve happened.

Voted "other people". By that I mean Yakov Smirnoff. His unconventional cause-and-effect theories, grounded in Marxism-Leninism, would have done wonders for the Soviet economy and peoples.

It was said that if USSR had realized the Trotsky's theory of Permanent Revolution in Europe, the Nazis would have no chance to come to power.
And also, Trotsky is the architect of the Red Army and he did defeat the English-French invaders and the White Army who interfered in the revolution.

It was said that if USSR had realized the Trotsky's theory of Permanent Revolution in Europe, the Nazis would have no chance to come to power.
And how would that have been done? This kind of "what-if" history fails because it assumes completely unrealistic events. Stuff like "what if the USSR had invaded the world, would we have communism?" or "what if the nazis had landed on US shores?"
Basically, things like that can be made irrelevant by simply asking, "How do you know?"

Indeed, it's easy to be wise after the event. But We know that from the estimate based on the historical evidence. At least the condition would be better since Trotsky was struggling to united all the European workers. Trotsky had already analysed the Fascism clearly before, so he should have known the situation well.

If Trotsky had become leader socialism would have magically spread all around the world overnight cos the only reason it didn't is Stalin wanted to keep it in one country cos he was bad

Other people, and by other people I mean the workers.
Ideally this.
However more realistically I think Bukharin would've been the best leader. I think Buhalin was supposed to be Bukharin so that's what I voted for :tongue_smilie:
Alexandra Kollontai would also have been awesome. But again I'm not sure how realistic that would've been.

Come on. You really think the USSR could just leap instantly from unhealthy beuracracy back to total soviet control? Bukharin at least didn't have a crazy industrialisation fetish that would've required massive state beuracracy and he was serious candidate for leader of the CPSU.

Trotters was actually pretty much a military genius, and was widely lauded for his efforts in the civil war.
Basically, he was far superior to stalin, who couldn't of been much worse :P
