The CCOO and UGT (Communist and social democratic unions) have called a strike of public sector workers for June 2. This is in reaction to the austerity measures announced by the Socialist Party head of government Zapatero. The CGT anarcho-syndicalist union has urged the CCOO and UGT to extend this to a national general strike since the austerity measures affect the whole population.

Is there a link in English that you could provide? This is serious news, if struggles like what has happened in Greece extend to the other "PIIG" countries, it will have serious ramifications for the class struggle for our side as well as theirs.

Is it me or does it seem like the 2010s will be the new 1910s? Class struggle is intensifying.

(Communist and social democratic unions)Communist like Marxist-Leninist?
Social democrats = :(
The CGT anarcho-syndicalist union has urged the CCOO and UGT to extend this to a national general strike since the austerity measures affect the whole population. Id give Anarcho-Syndicalism another chance if it were leading this strike instead of working with statists who manage the struggle to gain power for themselves.
I don't like compromise.

We got poor impoverished nations fighting back with Maoism(Nepal,Thailand?,Philippines, and India)
Latin America with Democratic Socialism/Marxism(Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia)
We have Greece who is a breeding ground for insurrection.
We could have France/Spain/Germany/Portugal/Ireland in the mix again
if another Greek 2008 event breaks out and solidarity events lead to insurrections like they did in a few countries in 08
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Greek_riots#International_response_and_demons trations_abroad)
or they intensify there own struggles
(Which it seems like it according to article in Spain,or like brewing militancy in Ireland were there fighting the Pigs/attempting to rush Parliament)
This is going to be a good year.

Well, that's fine and dandy but the CGT only has 60,000 members, and represents less than a fifth of public sector workers. The CGT is a "militant minority" organization. The CCOO and UGT have a million members and represent 70% of the country's workers. In fact the CGT has been pushing, thru meetings and marches, for a national general strike since 2008. But they're a minority. They need broad support among workers for a national general strike.

Don't hold your breath. In the 1910's, the working-class was organized, fighting for and winning important reforms, and class conscious to a degree that the present doesn't even approach. There's nothing like that now. In 2010, the Left is the stinking corpse in the room.

Lets see how militant they are. I'll be watching the news on this.

in today's public sector strike in Spain, the heads of government are downplaying the strike, claiming only 10 percent participation but the unions are claiming 75 percent participation. The march in Barcelona of UGT and Workers Commissions had about 30,000 people. CGT had a separate demonstration. Head of the Workers Commissions in Catalonia is saying there may be a general strike if the government continues in its intent of cutting salaries and pensions and cutting services. CGT and CNT have been calling for a general strike for some time. in health care and regional raiilways in Barcelona only the legal minimum service was being provided.
