Last Sunday, around 13.5 million voters were called on to vote for a new state parliament in the highly-populated Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) in Germany. Michael Aggelidis, an attorney and also a member of the Left Party regional council for issues concerning the environment, energy policy, and climate change, is a newly elected member of the NRW state parliament.
Michael Aggelidis is the son of a Greek immigrant father and a German mother. When asked how difficult a career in politics can be for a German Citizen of Greek origin, Mr. Aggelidis replied that although he was not faced with any difficulties participating in politics and political parties, he does not however believe that this is the general rule. Mr. Aggelidis was the only candidate of Greek origin and one of the very few candidates with an immigrant origin, in a state that has the most immigrants in Germany. Besides the fact, German Citizens of Greek origin are barely 20,000 voters in the state of NRW.
