GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A Gettysburg National Military Park spokeswoman says a permit is likely to be granted for a white supremacist group to hold a rally at the battlefield next month.

Park spokeswoman Katie Lawhon says the Aryan Nations group applied for the permit last week to hold a rally June 19 near the Cyclorama Center.
Lawhon said because the land is publicly owned, the park is "obligated to make it publicly available for exercising First Amendment rights" and make Gettysburg's historical resources "available to all Americans, even those whose views are contrary to the majority of the public."

In response, the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County has announced plans for a "celebration of diversity" on the same day. In 2006, the group held a "Community Unity Day" to counter a battlefield rally held by the World Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

It's been done before. As with all the other times, it has no effect except the illustration of their marginality through the low turnout and the massive counter-demonstrations that erupt.

Maybe they could re-enact Pickett's charge. I'd be happy to play the part of one of the Union soldiers. They could slowly advance across the open field towards Cemetary Ridge as we would shoot them to pieces. We'd need at least 12,500 KKK and about 6,000 would have to be prepared to get maimed or killed - all for the cause of remembrance and histrorical accuracy.

General Pickett was asked why his charge at Gettysburg failed, General Pickett replied: "I've always thought the Yankees had something to do with it."

I wanted to say something like that...

It's ironic that white supremacists march on the very battleground that was one of the largest victories against the southern race-based feudal system.
