Arizona (http://topics.abcnews.go.com/topic/Arizona) Gov. Jan Brewer (http://topics.abcnews.go.com/topic/Jan-Brewer) has signed a bill targeting a school district's ethnic studies program, hours after a report by United Nations (http://topics.abcnews.go.com/topic/United-Nations) human rights experts condemned the measure.

State schools chief Tom Horne, who has pushed the bill for years, said he believes the Tucson (http://topics.abcnews.go.com/topic/Tucson) school district's Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people.

Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race, he said.

"It's just like the old South, and it's long past time that we prohibited it," Horne said.

Brewer's signature on the bill Tuesday comes less than a month after she signed the nation's toughest crackdown on illegal immigration — a move that ignited international backlash amid charges the measure would encourage racial profiling of Hispanics. The governor has said profiling will not be tolerated.

I think all the attempts to equate the present situation in the US with Nazi Germany or to otherwise imply that the US has become a "fascist state" are really baseless and ridiculous. The US has always been a viciously racist state. That the bourgeoisie and their representatives in government at the state and federal level are cracking down on minorities and immigrants (as part of and in addition to attacks on the working class as a whole) in the wake of an economic crisis is NOTHING out of the ordinary. It's business as usual for the capitalist class. It has nothing to do with fascism at all.

This doesn't make it 'fascist', though.
Racism + anti-Semitism =/= fascism.

From the newscast I've seen there are like 12 to 14 more states looking at passing their own version of the same law. When we have to stop at each state border and produce papers we will be just that much closer.

Arizona is constantly ruining the education of their students, this is another step in the wrong direction.
If we can't have Mexican-American studies, we might as well not have Western Civilization, Euro, World or American History, because it shows how terrible Westerners are, oppressing everyone.

Both advocates are white, and both support the recent immigration law, sounds like pure racism. So, why is this being allowed to happen? Other than that, a democracy doesn't work because we can only 'vote' on the bones they throw us.

I don't understand this, especially in a state where the population is 6,595,778 people with 1,000,000+ people being Hispanic / Latino. Still a minority, but it is the second biggest group of people occupying the state.

I remember seeing a picture somewhere of Jan Brewer's likeliness done up like Hitler. She's fitting that more and more as the days go on.

Personally thought what I find more sickening is that many people are defending Arizona's actions.

My point stands.
I think there is a misunderstanding of what fascism actually is (http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/works/1944/1944-fas.htm#p1). It is not just a pejorative for right wing xenophobes or a government that passes racist legislation - these things are par for the course with capitalism, even in its liberal democratic veneer. Otherwise, there are fascist governments all over Europe right now and many - maybe even most - American presidents have been 'fascist'. And likewise, under de jure segregation, much of the US would have been 'fascist'. But this is not the case because 'fascism' = a specific historical phenomenon and not just a synonym for 'right wing governments' or 'state-sanctioned racism and repression'.

Are there any reports from the USM side of the border? I have been busy with other work, but would like to see what anybody else can find.

To hell with this law - it reminds of when the Taliban passed laws against teaching girls. Well what did the Afghan teachers do? They opened clandestine schools for girls. So if any of you are school teachers in Arizona, open an after school environment where you can teach chicano/a students about their past. Or better yet make the whole history curriculum ethno-centric so what what was once the "ghetto of ethnic studies" is now mainstream, instead of white studies masquerading as "social studies".

Anyway as horrible as this is, I want to hear from educators in Arizona about how they are resisting this bullshit.

Heavily accented teachers removed from Arizona classrooms (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/answer-sheet/teachers/heavily-accented-teachers-remo.html)

Lets see right wing leaders supported by those who want to deregulate the free market racial profiling, degradation of Hispanics, everyone and their mum being accused of being a commie by their supporters, stopping education that would be disadvantageous to them, people of certain races are forced to carry their papers, camps, oh and the media tells you that all your problems are happening because of Mexicans.
Wonderful, did they get their order of gas chambers yet?

The thing that confuses me is many of them are *****ing about "big government" and cramping on liberties, yet a lot of these things seem to be big government and crapping on liberties. I suppose it's ok when they do it to other people.

I suppose it's ok when they do it to other people. No need to be confused, they are hypocrites and bigots - their justifications are just smoke and mirrors and that's why their evidence is usually based on lies (immigrants take welfare and our generous social benefits.... Mexico is going to take over the US... Mexicans are part of a plot to take-over the southwest) or self-contradicting (Down with the nanny-state and government intrusion in our lives... but also build a billion dollar border wall, give more power to the police to intrude into poor people's lives, and make sure people with dark skin have to carry government papers with them at all times).

We've moved beyond Orwell newspeak and are now in the era of Superman's Bizzaro universe where up means down and Right-wing Christians claim that attempts to prevent them from oppressing gay people is a restriction on their freedom of religion:rolleyes:.

Lewis Black said it really well when he quoted Glen Beck's claim that Obama was like Hitler because "First they went after the banks and then they went after Wall Street". Black responded... "well the Nazis went after the Jews to kill them, not to give them $700 billion! If that's Obama's Nazism, then please put me next on the hit-list!"

The bourgeoisie vocabulary is very tricky, when everytime they complain about "cramping on liberties" their actually talking about the bourgeoisie's (their own) liberties not the working classes and of course "big government" actually means a worker controlled society which cramps the bourgeoisie's "individual freedoms" to exploit people. It's rather laughable once you think about it and says alot about how egotistic the bourgeoisie really are.

Don't let their words fool you.
